I do not recomment this book. I am coming from a biased view as I have a degree in East Asian Studies and have lived and traveled extensively throughout the region.

I was anticipating some juicy inside info on China, but instead got a pretty standard view that I could find pretty much anywhere. The author actually lists his favourite places to go in Beijing?!?! Is this a book on travel or investment? If it is the latter, it fails miserably.

Near the end of the book, Trippon does review some strategies for China which I found woefully inadequate. I am sure he does more in depth research, but he mentions that he only looks at 3 ratios for initial evaluation. What?!?!?

If you are serious about investing in China, read Robert Hsu's "China Fireworks". Also, dig deeper and find your info. If you would like a very general overview, then perhaps this book may be OK. Otherwise, save your money.

I bought this book as soon as possible because I know Trippon's newsletter (The China Stock Digest) was the top Chinese stock newsletter in the country last year with a 58% gain. (He did 38% the year before and was the #2 among all stock newsletters in the U.S.)
Before "China Stock Guru" I had read every book on the Amazon bookshelf about the Chinese economy and investing in China without feeling I got the whole picture. But this is the only one that has it all. There's no bigger money-making story in the world than the sudden emergence of the world's second biggest economy but no book before this one has brought the whole picture together. It is a huge event...akin to the emergence of the U.S. industrial economy more than a century ago. Who wouldn't have wanted to invest on the ground floor of that?
Of course China is so much different from America and investment there requires special knowledge and background...the kind of understanding that Trippon seems to have in spades. Trippon has done a good job of taking a picture of this huge economic/social development and boiling it down into clear, understandable size, providing a practical and usable perspective for dedicated investors who have an appetite to seek new opportunities while the U.S. is having a tough time economically.

I wanted specifics of how to buy China stocks; I didn't want a history lesson. I could, and have, learned more just searching online than I did with this book. For me, it was a waste of money.
