Editorial Reviews

In this charming romantic comedy of errors, Jake Sullivan (Dean Cain, Out of Time, Futuresport, ABC's Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) - who recently inherited a small bed and breakfast in California wine country - is the almost ex-husband of movie star Amanda Cox (Kimberly Quinn, End Game). Unfortunately, while he still loves her, Amanda's on the way to town with divorce papers. In Rio, Ana Villanova (award-winning Brazilian actress Juliana Paes) is struggling to sort out her complicated life. Engaged to a beach bum, her loser half-brother is in trouble with the mob and her father dies leaving her liable for a mountain of debt. When Ana discovers the deed to now-valuable U.S. property among her father's effects, she's sure it's the answer to her dilemma. Only problem is - it's the same property Jake thinks he inherited. With a lawyer pal in tow posing as her husband (Julian Stone When in Rome, Eragone), the sultry urbanite arrives in the dusty country town of Webster to claim what's rightfully hers. Sparks soon fly - but a sour grapes dispute might just turn into a happy accident. Also starring Eric Roberts (The Expendables, The Dark Knight), John Savage (The Thin Red Line, The Deer Hunter), Julia Duffy (Intolerable Cruelty, CBS' Newhart) and Bill Engvall (Blue Collar Comedy Tour).

5.0 out of 5 stars Five stars because it's perfect for what it is April 7, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video
Not monumental Gone With the Wind or Schindler's List sort of five stars. More, the quintessential end of a long day, I don't want to think, be preached at, or feel depressed or like committing Harry Karry at the end kind of a movie because the main character sacrificed himself on a pillar of harp seals murdered by the bad guy. Bed and Breakfast gets five stars so you notice it in your movie search for the end of a long crappy day that you want to forget. It's predictable, but so are all romantic comedies. That's why romantic comedies are all about how well the cast mixes. In this case, the cast mix has a live play feel about it with likeable characters that bring a friendly giggle. After the movie, you'll go to bed with your slate clean of the day's cares and worries ready for the next day.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dean Cain at His Romantic Best March 5, 2012
Format:DVD
'Bed and Breakfast' has Dean Cain doing what he does so well- showing off his boyish smile and nice guy personality! This is a quality romantic comedy with all the usual elements. Of course, it's predictable; they all are. If you want a fun romance with a bit of conflict between the love interests, quirky but likeable characters, beautiful scenery and a happy ending, here you go.

Dean's character is fixing up a huge home that he inherited from a friend. His dream is to open a B&B. He's married and still longs for his good-for-nothing and unfaithful movie star actress/wife who left him high and dry and is now filing for divorce.

Now in Brazil, of all places, a sales supervisor(Paes) struggles to support her worthless brother, put up with a fun loving, self-center fiance, and try to keep her job. She suddenly finds herself loaded with a huge debt now left by here recently deceased father. Her friend and lawyer discovers she does have a deed to a property in the US left to her by a grandmother she never met.

Of course, this is the same place that Dean believes he owns, thus the catch in the story, where all the tension and fun begins, once she arrives to lay claim to what may be hers. He's not about to give up without a fight.

The side characters including John Savage as a grumpy customer, and Eric Roberts as an apparent uptight, fastidious boarder are amusing, but the entertainment is between the leads as any good RC should be.

As noted by other reviewers, they need larger subtitles. There's not a great deal, but we had to pause to read some of them. Once she's in the States, they pretty much speak English. The filming and editing are well done; there's implied sexuality(with some funny, amorous newlywed Japenese) but none shown, other than some kissing; no real language; no bad people.

It's lightweight fare like it should be, and we enjoyed it. Give us more!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Entertaining December 30, 2011
Format:DVD
This is a different kind of romantic movie in that it has a number of scenes in Brazil early in the movie but then moves to the United States. There are extended sections in Portuguese and later in English but sub-titles are provided for the Portuguese sections which move by very quickly; we discovered we had to pause the movie in order to read the English translations.

The movie is adequately paced and has some lovely scenery in both Brazil and later in California. The acting is satisfactory and the characters are of sufficient interest that one begins to care what happens to them.

This is a chick-flick with a South American twist that is generally entertaining and fun to watch.

3.0 out of 5 stars Predictable romantic comedy... February 26, 2012
Format:DVD
It's not that Bed and Breakfast is a bad movie. The formula is simply an overused one. Jake (Dean Cain) is a handyman who was left a dilapidated home in California's wine country. Slowly, he fixes up the place to get it ready to be a respectable bed and breakfast inn. But then he finds out that another person, Ana (Juliana Paes), in Brazil no less, is claiming ownership. Ana decides to sneak a visit to California, they meet, get mad at each other, and then...

Well, what do you expect?

Here are a couple of interesting plot problems. Jake and his bother are always commenting about getting and drinking a beer. You may notice that these "beers" are O'Douls, a non-alcoholic brew. And Ana suddenly becomes a cook extraordinaire, even though there is not a hint at this talent earlier in the movie.

It's a fun movie, as long as you temper your expectations.

Bed & Breakfast is a cutesy, no brainer movie. The lead characters are beautiful, as is the California countryside where the story is set. Honestly, it seems very Hallmark Hall of Fame-ish, (not always a bad thing), rather than a movie theater movie. As long as you know ahead of time what you're getting, and choose to watch anyway, I think you'll enjoy this movie.

3.0 out of 5 stars Standard romance in lovely setting May 17, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video
Not a "sleepless in seattle" but better than most as there was no gratuitous violence and very little cursing, which is a nice switch from some of the more modern romances.

Not that you should expect a great deal of depth from this genre, but a bit of character development is warranted. The acting is a mediocre at best.
