Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

With eight million copies of her books in print, life must be a bed of roses for romance author Stone. But not for her heroine, who lies in intensive care, her fate dependent upon the man she (inexplicably) jilted.
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Stone, best-selling romance author, has written another light drama that is sure to prove popular with her fans. It tells the story of a beautiful actress, Cassandra Winter, and the true love of her life, the fabulously wealthy (and also handsome and moody) Napa Valley wine wizard Chase Tessier. Due to a series of tragic misunderstandings, Cassandra and Chase separate. When Cassandra is viciously attacked and hovers near death, Chase spends a lot of time in her hospital room reflecting, foiling further attacks on her life, and helping the addled detectives solve the crime and find the attacker. Despite being formulaic and contrived, Stone's latest work does its job--it's an easy read about an unrealistic, fantasy-based relationship that tidily resolves all the issues by its happy ending. More About the Author

Bestselling Seattle-born author Katherine Stone set about plotting her life's journey at a very young age. At age five she knew she hoped to become a doctor. Then, after writing her first short story at age 11, she realized that she'd love to be a writer, too.

In pursuit of that youthful dream, Katherine attended Stanford University, where she completed her premed requirements while majoring in English. She received her M.D. from the University of Washington. Following her internal medicine residency in San Francisco, she accepted a fellowship in infectious diseases in Los Angeles.

What remains one of the world's largest outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease coincided with her fellowship, which gave her the opportunity to write and lecture on this mysterious new disease. But it was not all work and no play. There was also romance in L.A. It was there (during a spinal tap!) that she met her future husband, physician and novelist Jack Chase.

While she had accomplished the first half of her young-life goals, Katherine never really got around to the second part--being a writer--until Jack bought her a word processor and urged her to "Just do it." The result? Bestselling books in the distinctive Katherine Stone style: a marriage of lyrical prose, evocative emotion and, above all, romance.

"There's nothing wrong with incurable romanticism," the physician asserts. "I love writing about nice people, who are giving life their best shot despite the sometimes monumental obstacles I place in their paths and who discover, despite those obstacles, the splendor and power of love."

Although Katherine has hung up her stethoscope for the moment and is writing full-time at her home near Seattle, her medical background is often evident in her books. "I very much enjoy sharing my passion for medicine--its drama, its emotion and yes, its science--with my readers."

The author of 21 novels, including Twins, Bel Air, Love Songs, and Pearl Moon, Katherine's books have been translated into 20 languages and sold worldwide. She is in the midst of converting all her novels into e-book formats (and thinking about her next book!)

1.0 out of 5 stars Convoluted mess . . ., December 10, 2004
This was my first Katherine Stone book and it will be my last. These are my reasons: Some readers praise her "beautiful" writing, but the attempts at lyricism are overdone and painful. Bed of Roses contains enough misunderstandings, failed communication, and implausible coincidences, and plot twists to fill five books. And finally, Stone has to spend a lot of time with her characters giving exposition in order to get through character motivation and background, and the result is a painful read. I hate talking about a writer like this, but sometimes the truth must be told. This book is atrocious, and I think she must be able to do better. Don't waste your time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Story!!! But Doesn't Jusitify Length..., January 7, 2003
By A Customer
I like a lengthy story, but KS's are only lengthy because of too many repetitive lines; she writes practically the same sentences throughout most of her books. That is a little annoying. That said, I thought Chase was perfect, Cassandra was lovely, and the story line held my interest. However, I could have done without the blatant description of Cassandra's wounds, Dr. Stone.
This is a book well worth reading. KS is one of the few authors whose work captures the reader on page one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A romance classic, March 20, 2011

Katherine Stone pens a poignant story of love found and lost, then found once again. Real life situations and characters that feel like close friends. Both the main and secondary romances touched me on a personal level. Katherine Stone is an author with a gift for drama. I recommend her books for anyone who loves a heart felt love story.
