The Elektra years+2 ringers,
By
This review is from: Bedroom Classics 1 (Audio CD)
It's hard to believe it took until 2004 for somebody to anthologize Teddy's stay at Elektra. After his auto accident, Pendergrass left Philadelphia International and signed with Elektra. 14 of the 16 songs on this CD are from that era and it covers the years 84-93. Rhino throws in 2 Philly years ringers: "Close The Door" and "Turn Off The Lights" to back up their title concept. Besides the R&B hits, this also covers some album tracks, and is a decent look at his Elektra stint. Some people say this era wasn't as strong as the Philly years, but there's enough great songs here like "Joy" and "You're My Choice Tonight" (the latter written and Produced by Luther Vandross), as well as his last R&B #1 as of 2004, "It Should've Been You", to refute that claim. There's also one song that stands with the 2 ringers here, "Love 4/2" that's as good as anything Teddy has ever recorded. The only weak link on this CD are the liner notes. A useless 5 page reminiscece by a Tracy H. New that offers no insight into Teddy's career or his Elektra years. If you have his Greatest Hits CD or the Anthology CD than this is a must have for your collection.

Teddy, You Will Surely Be Missed ... RIP,
By SuperDiva (Columbia, SC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bedroom Classics 1 (Reis) (Audio CD)
Unfortunately, this fabulous singer, songwriter, producer, drummer, entertainer, etc. is no longer with us. What a voice. I own this CD and many, many other Teddy Pendergrass CDs and I have a whole bunch of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes CDs too. I probably have them all. I quit counting a long time ago. Unfortunately, I don't think I've ever posted a review on any of Teddy's music. Truth be told, Teddy don't no review anyway ~ his songs can stand on their own because they are all just great works of art.
There are no words to express the sorrow I felt (and still feel) when I learned of Teddy's death. My sincere, heartfelt condolences goes out to his family as well as his very loyal fan base, of which, I am proud to be a member. ALL of Teddy's work with Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and his solo work is all phenomenal. This multi-talented balladeer will surely, surely be missed. Rest In Peace, Teddy
