Josh Rouse and The Long Vacations Oh, Look What The Sun Did!

"Songwriting for me is something I have to do to stay on the sunny side of life. It's my therapy. I pick up a guitar from time to time and it spills out. I feel lucky in that, after years of being blessed by their presence, the song spirits are still moving through me”

It may have been 15+ years - from roots in rural Nebraska, through time in ‘Music City’ ... Read more in Amazon's Josh Rouse Store

Editorial Reviews

5 songs. JOSH ROUSE is pleased to announce the first release on his new label, BEDROOM CLASSICS, VOL 2, an EP that picks up in a series of which began at the turn of the century with the first volume. According to Josh, "Bedroom Classics, Vol. 2 consists of 5 tracks, some instrumental and some with my voice. I'm excited about it, it's really moody and different from anything I've put out." Indeed! Largely inspired by Josh's love of film scores, Vol. 2 will be available in limited quantities.

I've heard it said (but by whom I couldn't tell you) that the average album can be labelled a "keeper" if it contains three strong tracks. That would mean that to be considered decent or good, a 12-song album can contain up to 75% filler. That's like a potato chip bag that is 75% full of air, or trail mix that is 75% peanuts (the snack analogies never fail to make the point). The standard of quality, it seems, is clearly heading down the tubes.* (*I do understand that "good" is also a highly subjective term, and recognize that one person's trash may be another's treasure, however filler is one of those things that a discriminating listner can usually identify)

Which makes the EP format so refreshing, especially in the hands of a master like Josh Rouse. Here there's nowhere to hide. Surely within the span of a 12-track album, filler can be stuffed in somewhere even when it doesn't constitute 75% of what's going on. But with only 5 songs to work with, the quality level becomes evident much more quickly and the bar is set higher since an EP is so much easier to dismiss. EPs are also where the creative musician can bury sonic experimentation that might not fly on his or her "regular" albums, which in Josh's case works to his advantage. His cinematic, exploratory works present a different side to his sound, strange yet uniquely compelling. That's what makes this little EP shine. As a conceptual work it has a solid flow, where individual songs blend into a larger composition. The EP is bookened by two instrumental pieces, both of which sound like something from a dreamy film sequence. In between is more standard Josh Rouse fare, but these songs stand out among his best.

Great music, but I only play cd's on a stereo or surround system. The first disc eventually gets stuck on the final track after some dreadful noise which I am sure could damage your speakers. If this is the video, it should play on a surround sound system, if not, then at least cut the final track so that the video is on its own. Will probably experience the same on the second disc when I get to listen to it, if not, the first dics must have a problem.
