Gentry has a master's degree in journalism from the University of California at Berkeley, where she was the recipient of the Edna Kinard Prize, the Alfred & Ruth Thompson Perassolo Scholarship and a Regent's Fellowship. She graduated with departmental honors from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.
