Editorial Reviews

Review

"A few reads of this ought to tire out kids before their not-canceled-after-all bedtimes."
Booklist

"Meng playfully expands and exaggerates children's efforts to put off the inevitable lights-out and turns a universal tug of war into a hilarious tour de force."
Kirkus

"Meng's writing is clear, direct, and funny, and Neyret's digitally created illustrations have an appropriately comic and cartoonish tone."

More About the Author

I was born in Walnut Creek, California, the middle child of five kids. Don't believe everything you hear about the forgotten middle child. We have our methods for getting noticed. My siblings excelled at everything academic. I excelled at daydreaming. My parents were not amused.

My experiences volunteering at a homeless shelter while in college helped me understand the importance of communication and the role it plays in how we see and understand each other as a society. It also showed me how grownups are instrumental in giving kids hope, health, and inspiration to succeed.

My thoughts on writing? For me, it's about the music and the rhythms found in words. The joys of my childhood - music and poetry - wrapped up in the words of today. I love to honor the impulses of our spirited children. I tell my kids I have the best job in the world. I'm a professional daydreamer.

My kids love Meng's quirky writing style and wild imagination. And what a great idea for a children's book ... makes the point that bedtime is necessary without being obvious or preachy. I love books that let my kids, young as they are, draw their own conclusions.

Bedtime is cancelled -- at least, that's one brother and sister's desire. But their parents aren't buying it... until the news appears in the media and spreads through the whole community. It's a dream come true... or is it?

This is a cute and clever cautionary tale about being careful what you wish for. Even "good" things can have unintended consequences, as young readers will delight in discovering. This book might not stop bedtime struggles, but it's sure to make your young'un smile.

When bedtime is canceled by a brother and sister's note, everyone takes notice. But when children and adults stay up all night, they find themselves exhausted and unable to take care of things the next day. And so, when the same children write a new note, this time reading that bedtime is not canceled, everyone happily listens and goes to bed. This humorous bedtime picture book will engage young readers, ages 3-6.

"Bedtime is cancelled" is now a joke we use in our family whenever my 5yo fights bedtime. My kids love this book - especially my wanna-be-night-owl.

My daughter is five and LOVES this book. I read it and she laughed the whole way through. She asked me to re-read it and she laughed the whole way through again. She wants my husband to read it to her next. Good job on this one! Great text and great illustrations!
