Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K—The sun is setting in the jungle, and animal mothers are gathering their babies close to settle them for the night. Each mother encourages her little one(s) to go to sleep with soft words of comfort in this counting book, beginning with a rhino saying, "Sleep" to her one baby, a monkey softly urging, "Rest" to her two babies, etc., until finally, elephants assemble their ten babies to rest by the river, as shown in a foldout. The song "Over in the Meadow" is the inspiration for the book's verses. What distinguishes this title is its stunning illustrations. The story begins with a hint of daylight in the background, and with each subsequent spread the sun gradually sets in tones of pink, lilac, violet, and then deep blue as the moon gently rises and stars appear in the night sky. The animals are depicted in their natural settings in soothing shades that are sure to bring about the calm that encourages sleep. A lovely addition.—C. J. Connor, Campbell County Public Library, Cold Spring, KY END

The moon has started to rise in the sky and the stars began to speckle the night sky behind it. It was time for the jungle to prepare for night. The "sky was streaked with red" and would soon set. An owl sat quietly waiting on a branch above a tiered waterfall. Two bats had emerged from their daytime hiding places and began to fly. A mother rhino lay quietly in the grass waiting for her baby to join her. "Sleep," said her mother to her little one. A monkey was sitting in a bed she had made for herself and her two babies. Soon they would be drifting off to sleep. The leopard, wolf, tiger, peahen, wild pig, duck, crocodile, and the elephants were all gathering their babies close.

"It was bedtime
in the jungle,

And the stars shone
in heaven.

A wild pig
snuffled softly

Round her babies
seven."

I loved the calming aura the text and the artwork created. The soothing, earthy pastel shades of the pages were lovely and the animals were adorable. One of the most amazing pages was of an elephant standing behind a tree while her baby splashed water over himself by the river. The page pulls out to reveal several mothers and their young getting ready for sleep. This is also a simple counting book (1-10) and also shows the animals in their natural habitats. If you want a multipurpose bedtime story your preschooler will love, this would be an excellent choice!

The book has a cute counting story. However, it has a whole bunch of animals that don't actually live in the jungle.
