5.0 out of 5 stars Short But Sweet, May 20, 2010
By
Siklootd (Santa Fe, NM) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bedtime Prayers (Audio CD)
Blinded Colony is a great band within the modern Melodic Death Metal scene. The band is relatively unknown, which is rather disappointing when considering their pure level of raw talent in all fields. The instrument work is amazing, and the vocals are top notch, grade-"A" Melodeath.

Following the release of their debut album, "Divine", Blinded Colony recruited a new vocalist. Replacing former vocalist Niklas Svensson, with new vocalist Johan Schuster, the band still remains true to their old style of playing and musical structure. The band begins the album with the track entitled "My Halo", a very deep song with a heavy hitting introduction, leading into brutal riffs and distinct vocal growls. The chorus switches to clean sung vocals, very similar to Sonic Syndicate and Scar Symmetry.

The band mixes clean vocals with traditional death growls associated with the Melodic Death Metal scene. High pitched growls are constant and present in every track, making the album's overall tone quite "heavy". However, the band counters this perfectly with well sung clean vocals.

The band's lyrical content comes across as somewhat anti-religious in many regards, referring to religion as a means of scapegoating someone, as seen in the track "21st Century Holocaust" where the band blames religion for why people continue to lack understanding. These kinds of lyrics contribute to the overall feel of the album, making it more enjoyable to listen to.

The album continues in this fashion, combining excellent guitar strumming, riffs, and solos, with up-tempo drum beats and well performed vocals. Songs that truly stand out on this album include "My Halo", "The Need", and "Once Bitten, Twice Shy", however every track is truly amazing and worth listening to. Tracks such as "The Need" are extremely catchy and melodic, allowing the listener to quickly pick up on the lyrics and eventually singing along in no time. The track "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" was actually featured in the recent video game "The Darkness". However, despite this publicity, the band remains relatively unknown.

The album is great from start to finish, and resembles bands such as Sonic Syndicate and Mercenary, making it an easy transition for anyone who already currently enjoys these bands to begin to listen to Blinded Colony. My only complaint with the album is that it is way too short. By only featuring nine tracks, you never really get enough time to truly begin to feel the style that "Bedtime Stories" has to offer. It feels as if once you're getting into the album, it is already over!

Melodic Death Metal is hard to come by, and good Melodic Death Metal is even more rare, but Blinded Colony is truly an amazing band, and "Bedtime Prayers" is truly an amazing album that should be added to any Death Metal collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Generic, but Still "Top Shelf" Generic, March 14, 2009
This review is from: Bedtime Prayers (Audio CD)
I recently discovered Blinded Colony and quickly purchased the "Bedtime Prayers" album upon hearing some quick samples, but very quickly the newness of album disappeared and I was left with a pretty generic album.

There is nothing wrong so much with the band - they are capable musicians and craft pretty catchy songs! But with the huge pool of Melodic Death Metal bands, from sweden especially, I just don't see much staying power with these guys.

There is nothing new here and especially something that hasn't been done better before. Most of the songs will keep you headbanging away and make you want to sing along with the ultra catchy choruses but truth be told, I can't really make that justify this album sitting in my player for too long.

The vocalist has the same old hardcore style yell/scream that so many of his peers are doing that you forget who you are listening to. He is however very capable, he can hold long notes and keep alot of brutal texture on his voice which is definatley a plus and his cleans are pretty good and fit perfectly with the songs!

There is a bit of synth use, as with most of the third gen melodic bands, but it isn't overpowering at all and keeps a good melody especially on the song "Aaron's Sons" (which is my personal favorite on this album.)

I would compare this album as a mixture of the following: Soilwork, Sonic Syndicate and a little 36 Crazyfists thrown in.

Definatley not a bad album by any means, and if you are looking for a watered down sequel of Soilwork's "Natural Born Chaos" then you may have found a new band! I don't want to deter anyone from purchasing this album but don't expect something fresh. There is a certain charm and honesty missing in this band's performance; but I will try their next one in hopes that the sound matures a bit!
