3.0 out of 5 stars Don't Read at Bedtime!
You'll want to read this book when you're alert and focused. While some of the content was gratuitous, the overall message was good. Taking responsibility isn't a bad thing and the world would be a better place if we all did more of it!

This book is funny, insightful reading. It helps reduce confusing, foggy grown-up issues to bite-sized, manageable pieces. Read this before going to bed to disolve the day's stress.

Bedtime Stories For Grown-ups was truly a joy to read. I love that they had the Three Bears eat that obnoxious Goldilocks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but more entertainment than advice . . ., February 6, 2007

This review is from: Bedtime Stories for Grown-Ups: Fairy-Tale Psychology (Paperback)
I liked how the book was segmented into easy to read, manageable fairytales. This made reading at bedtime or the gym easy since I could read a tale or 2, arrive at a good stopping place and then put the book down. I found it interesting the way the authors used well-known fairytales to illustrate modern self-help concepts (self-love, taking responsibility, manipulation etc.). i.e. it was intersting to see how each fairytale was customized and used to deliver which messages. While the book delivered good advice through each story, I found many of the focal messages and advice kind of cliched and simplistic. I also found most of the attempts at humor by the authors to be kind of corny, albeit original. All in all, the concept of the book was interesting and provided me entertainment, but not so much of enlightenment or self-awareness. I was fine with entertainment in this case.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is full of great stories that make you feel good., August 29, 1998

I read this book for the first time a couple of years ago. I still pick it up and read a story or two every now and then because they make me smile. I've purchased other self-help books that were too long and boring to actually help. The stories in this book are short, funny, and light-hearted. They are based on fairy tales and each one deals with a different issue. I frequently refer to the story that addresses stress. It's called Dam It All and is based on The Little Dutch Boy. Every time I read this story, it makes me laugh and puts things into perspective. I recommend this book for anyone - whether they need some serious uplifting, or just an occassional bit of encouragement.

I seldom write lengthy reviews for books I purchase because of time restrictions. If the old saying laughter is the best medicine is true, which I believe has much truth, this book is a great prescription. I received the book, glanced through and then found I couldn't set it down. If you are looking for an in depth psychology book save your money. The little psychology at the end of each chapter are good pieces for thought and in my opinion great to introduce kids to positive thinking. I laughed so much that I couldn't help but feel better. I even purchased another copy so that I could share it with friends. I highly recommend
this book to anyone with a sence of humor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Funny, July 11, 2006

I just love fairytales. This was a great collection of hilariously re-written fairytales. I also enjoyed Politically Correct Fairy Tales, but the best I have found so far is Enchanted by Nancy Madore, which combines the the fairytales with erotic fantasies. I think rewriting these classics for adults is a wonderful idea and I never get tired of reading them.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to use a sense of humor for solving self-esteem problems, August 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Bedtime Stories for Grown-Ups: Fairy-Tale Psychology (Paperback)
This cleverly written book is truly a treasure. It will jar your funny-bone with many surprises yet go on to hit home with profound gold nuggets of truth and enlightenment. It's best read one story at a time, digest it's application, and then be ready to read and absorb a new story the next day.It is the perfect book for the person who has problems but no money for the "professional's couch." The stories apply to anyone's situations and shed light in a humorous way that almost makes one forget his dilema. It is so enjoyable and fun that bedtime will never be the same.
