Product Description

The hive is made of white pine and is 46" long (almost 4 feet!). It comes with a well-supported gabled rooftop that is covered in thick white aluminum. It comes with a follower board - sometimes called a false-back that can help control the space the colony is using. It has a heavy duty professional screened bottom board that runs the entire length of the hive. It also has a mite board that slides easily in the bottom. This can assist in ventilation techniques as well as mite counts. It comes with 14 brood top bars that are 19" x 1 3/8" thick that can be used in the brood area of the hive. The remaining 14 bars are 19 x 1 5/8" and can be used as the honey production bars. There are three entrance holes along the long side of the hive. These hives are a wonderful alternative for the environmentally-minded, research-inclined, or experiment-driven beekeeper. Some assembly required. Assembly hardware (nails, screws, etc) are NOT included. There are three wood grade types for hives; select, commercial, and budget. These are commercial grade quality hives. This means that there may be some minor knots in the wood, the may have a bit of a rougher cut, or there may be an extra staple or two to make sure it's held together securely. Our goal is to sell a quality structurally sound hive.

I have one of these top-bar hives. The quality is excellent. The top bars will fit in a standard US Langstroth hive if necessary, but a Langstroth frame will not fit in this top bar hive unless the end bars and bottom bars are removed and the comb trimmed to fit. I will order another if a few days.

I've had this hive for nearly a year. I treated it with a combination of linseed oil and beeswax about 2 weeks before I installed a package of Italian bees. It has weathered beautifully, and the bees are healthy and productive, so productive that they swarmed 3 times. I now have a locally mated queen and two of my neighbors also bought these hives to house their bees in. Even with the swarming, I had several bars of honey. The natural cell size let us completely avoid chemicals. Next year, I'll be more vigilant about expanding the brood nest once the flow is on. Highly recomended!

I bought this for my sister since she is a beekeeper. I assembled it for her and it was little more challenging than I expected. There was only a single page of instructions which was ok it was pretty straightforward for the most part however, I wish it had recommended what type of nails to use. It is really hard to judge which size nail to use when there are dozens of choices at Lowes and no suggestions from the manufacturer of the hive. Anyway, it's built and the bees have a new home so it all worked out.

quality is medium, great place to start...there are lots of improvements to be made but for the beginner it will suffice for a year or two

This is not the fanciest or best made tob bar hive out there, but it is excellent for a beginner not wanting to spend another hundred or two on his first hive. The instructions were sparse, but adequate. A few pictures or line drawings of the assembly process would have been helpful. Also, a viewing window on the side of the hive would be a good idea so one could check on the hive without disturbing it, even if this adds a few dollars to the price. Maybe it could be an option?

If you are a beginner, this is a good starting point. If you are an old pro, you might want to spend more on one of the more solid ones, or build your own.
