Biography

The Bee Gees were a British singing group consisting of three brothers: Barry Gibb and twins Robin Gibb and Maurice Gibb. Not only were they successful in their own right, with seven Grammys to their name, their body of work has been re-interpreted by a huge variety of other artists, from Elvis and Dolly Parton to Billy Corgan and Feist. Of their 35 albums, 200 million copies have been sold, and… Read more in Amazon's Bee Gees Store

5.0 out of 5 stars 35 Years - The Definitive Collection!, May 6, 2004
This review is from: Bee Gees - Record: Their Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
The Bee Gees (Brothers Gibb) have released several compilation albums; "Best of Bee Gees Vol 1", "Vol. 2" and "Bee Gees Greatest" which were primarily period pieces. Their "Tales..." Box Set was a complete and exhaustive collection of all of their hits and B-Sides plus some rarities, but only went to 1990. This collection is the first one to address ALL of their big singles including versions formerly only recorded by other artists.

In some cases, critics have arguable compared this to the "Beatles I" released last year. It's not far off. Containing no less than (19) #1 hits written by the Bee Gees and (11) of these recorded by them, it is an impressive set. None of the other songs fell below the Top 30 either in the USA or Europe; an excellent gauge to choose the best singles from well over 50 choices.

The Bee Gees own versions of hits recorded by others fare well enough, but lack the exhuberance of the originals. "Emotion" doesn't reach the heights of Samantha Sang's or Destiny's Child's versions and "Immortality", unfortunately sounds like a demo. Only "Islands In The Stream" really kicks in with Robin leading an R&B version of the song that proves it was originally intended as soul, not just Country.

However, if this is the worst one can find in this remarkable set of (40) songs, that is saying a lot. There is no better proof of the incredible songwriting and harmonizing talent the three Brothers exhibit so easily. This is sure to be a historic item in anyone's collection. Who knows. It may even outsell "Saturday Night Fever" (and it really ought to).

Trivia note: This version sometimes has Barry Gibb singing the lead entry vocal on "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" and also includes the singles "My World" and "Jumbo" which were mysteriously omitted from the USA release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hidden Gem!!, November 23, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Bee Gees - Record: Their Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Unbeknownst to many, some early versions of this European 42 track version of "Hits" contains a rare alternate version of How Can You Mend A Broken Heart with Barry singing lead on the first verse!! The instrumentation is slightly different as well with some horns. I already had the U.S. version, but had to grab the European version for this one song alone, and it was well worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album, December 22, 2004
This review is from: Bee Gees - Record: Their Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This 2 CD album is like one of the best in my collection of Bee Gees CDs.

The sound is so great--every is song is remastered--they all sound better. I have The Best of the Bee Gees CD album that sounds good, but the Bee Gees Record: TGH sounds 10 times better than that.

My World, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, and all the rest have such a better sound to it.....Sharper, clearer, bolder, and just plain elegant.

Heartbreaker, Islands in the Stream, Emotion---all new recordings from 2001. Heartbreaker, I thought, sounded like early 90s but it wasn't---Barry's voice sounds a little bit younger compared to songs from the Still Waters album. Still a great song, though, don't get me wrong---mid-slow paced, Bee Gees type song. Islands in the Stream is a Robin solo, slow paced but more techno-like....good song though. Emotion is a good replica of the 1977 Emotion done with Samantha Sang and the Bee Gees---another good song (both are).

Yeah, like the songs World, Stayin' Alive, More Than a Woman, and many others have slightly extended fades (like when the song ends).

On the Import cd of Bee Gees: Their Greatest Hits, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart is the Robin-sung version---I think when I bought this CD, at the time, it was too late for the old version of How Can You Mend a Broken Heart; earlier versions of the import cd had it....but that's ok--this album is plenty good, the music is so much better in terms of the clarity and sharpness. This album dominates all other albums by the Bee Gees--it's that good.
