K-Gr 3--Two books in a series that covers basic material better than most. The texts are simple without being simplistic and the writing is clear and accurate with unfamiliar terms appearing in bold print. Both titles will interest the read-to-me crowd while older children, including beginning readers, will find them useful for reports. The full-color photographs are clear; often, the background scenery has been cut away to aid focus. Illustrations are used in areas where a photograph would not suffice, such as the inside of a bear's den. Each book devotes a two-page spread to its subject's anatomy and physical features. Both focus on a particular species: The Bee looks at honey bees while The Bear discusses black bears. However, these animals are also placed within the context of a broader world (The Bee shows "Other Insects," while The Bear shows "Other Carnivores"). Two welcome additions.
