5.0 out of 5 stars a little yellow alien, October 24, 2003
By

This review is from: Beegu (Hardcover)
A sweet tale that has held hundreds of preschoolers on our bookmobile spellbound as they relate to this little, long-eared, rabbit-like character. Few but meaningful words add to the simple yet lovely art that guides the listener through emotions that all children can relate to: lost, lonely, not able to make one's self understood, sad, perhaps even a bit scared, not belonging, unwanted, elation, and happiness. Not too long for the older 3's or 4 year olds, not too babyish for the 5 & 6 year olds. Beegu is a delightful story for the teachers who join us as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and haunting, April 6, 2006
By
This review is from: Beegu (Hardcover)
This story haunted me after reading it to my preschool students. If you have ever felt lost and unloved, you will relate to this moving story of a small alien stranded on an unfriendly world. However, Beegu has hope for the "small ones" on Earth. This is a great story for creating empathy in children for those who are different. If you are a parent or teacher with Beegu's faith in the small ones, you should read this book to the small ones in your life.Would you be Beegu's friend? I hope so!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best, October 8, 2004

We read and we read and we read, but there is not one book that can keep my children so quietly happy as this bittersweet, lovingly drawn little hybrid named beegu. It belongs on every little person's shelf.

Second only to "Slow Loris", Deacon's "Beegu" is a fantastic children's story. Another set of delicious illustrations fills a book that is a gentle reminder that sometimes things just work out, and everyone gets to be happy. Definately a feel good ending! Loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Story, August 11, 2008
This review is from: Beegu (Hardcover)
My two little boys love this book, especially my 6 year old. It's fun to read and the illustrations are wonderful. Beegu stands out among a backdrop of neutral colors. The page where Beegu wants a passerby on the street to pick her up is one of the saddest parts of the book. My son was very relieved that everything turns out okay for Beegu in the end.

A delightful, touching story that is a favorite in our household. Anything by Alexis Deacon is always a joy to discover, but this gem in particular is an instant classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A firm family favourite, April 6, 2006
This review is from: Beegu (Hardcover)
My 3 year-old demands Beegu at bedtime most nights. It's a simple and heartwarming story, but what makes it stand out is the superb quality of the illustration. The subdued palette and the deft drawing is far superior to the run-of-the-mill children's book artwork. I also love the way Beegu is ignored, overlooked, rejected by all the adults - appealing to a child's sense that only the small people can see and appreciate the otherworldly. I think Beegu's experience stranded on earth shows rather nicely what the knee-high view of what urban life must be like for toddlers: a see of hostile ankles and briefcases and no room to move.

My 6 & 7 year old grandchildren loved this book, as I am sure much ounger children will. The simple drawings clearly convey childhood emotions very with charm and humor. I enjoyed it as much as my kids did.

This was a nice story with good illustrations. The only thing I would note to parents is that Beegu is a child alien who only children seem to like and understand. He is very relatable and his feelings get hurt. The (human) adults in the book are not understanding of this alien child and react in fear. They do not come around or learn the alien child can be trusted by the end of the story. It has many good points, and the alien child's own parents understand him just fine. It may prompt some discussion.
