"The Beekeeper's Handbook" is the textbook used by the Montgomery County Beekeepers Association for its beginners short course. 3.0 out of 5 stars Good reference
This book seems a better reference manual than beginning beekeeper's guide. There is a wealth of information in the book, but I didn't think it was fun to read. I would recommend Beekeeping for Dummies as a first book. The Beekeeper's Handbook may come in handy for researching problems but is not the best for someone thinking about starting as a beekeeper.

"The Beekeeper's Handbook" is the textbook used by the Montgomery County Beekeepers Association for its beginners short course. The book has up-to-date information on mites, which was a big reason for selecting it. We also like the the way the book discusses several alterative approaches to most beekeeping situations. The book is well illustrated with drawings(no photographs). The physical construction of the book is good enough to take some abuse in the field.

Get "The Beekeeper's Handbook" if you are a beginning to intermediate level beekeeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful informative book for any level of beekeeper, December 10, 1999

This review is from: The Beekeeper's Handbook, Third Edition (Paperback)
I found the authors style to be easy to read, the technical terms were explained in detail and multiple approaches to various beekeeping situations discussed. The discussion on bee biology was interesing and the step by step instructions were easy to follow and well written. The section on colony disease management is excellent. Of the two dozen or so books I ahve on beekeeping - this is the one I would most reccomend for the technical information

I have most of the "standard" beekeeping books in my library, but this book is the best! The most logical and complete book I have seen yet, and very well illustrated. Logically written and yet interesting just to sit down and read. But it also does a great job of covering details of beekeeping and answering both basic and more complex questions of the hobby. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, May 1, 2005
This review is from: The Beekeeper's Handbook, Third Edition (Paperback)
I am new to bee keeping, my first hive didn't make it through Ohio's winter, when I picked up a new package to repopulate the hive, the owner of the apiary, Queens Right Colonies, recommended this book. Each time I get into my hive I look through the book to learn what I have seen. Has been very helpful. Great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginner's Book, June 20, 1999
This review is from: The Beekeeper's Handbook, Third Edition (Paperback)
As a beginning beekeeper, I found this book to very well written and an excellent jumping off point. The way almost all steps and facets of beekeeping are given advantages vs. disadvantages in this book was also extremely helpful and thought provoking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the 4th Edition, June 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is now in its 4th edition. That certainly tells you that it contains the essential information not only for beginning beekeepers but for all beekeepers. The diagrams are excellent and enhance the explanations in the text so that beekeepers not only read the information but see what they need to do. It is a book that all beekeepers will use for ready reference. It will be an excellent choice of textbook for bee courses on all levels. Those who have previous editions in their bee book collections will welcome the most current information in this 4th edition. I highly recommend this book to all beekeepers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for all beekeeper enthusiast!, March 16, 2009

This review is from: The Beekeeper's Handbook, Third Edition (Paperback)
When I first began keeping honey bees, The Beekeeper's Handbook, Third Edition was one of two books on beekeeping that I purchased. This particular book is easy to read, and it provides excellent visuals. It also has an intuitive layout for finding what you need. I'm three years into the wonderful world of apiculture and this book is pulled off the shelf several times throughout the season to aid me along the way e.g. "when should I reverse my hives, and which method should I use?" or I'm thinking of making my own nucs this year, so I'm going to see what the authors have to say on this subject.

In summary, this book is worth the extra money--you will use it for years to come. The Beekeeper's Handbook, Third Edition

It may be a matter of personal taste but this is the first book on this topic which gives me a feeling of being able to access bee-keeping. It seems to strip away the lore and mystery which have always accompanied bee-keeping. For the record I have yet execute the plan to acquire bees for honey. At least this books makes me feel more like it is something I can do.

This is definitely a 'must have' book for your beekeeping library. Avitabile and Sammataro completed an exhaustive work that is worthy as a reference book for years to come, or as an information source for folks looking to start keeping bees. Highly recommended.
