Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

"Carlin displays a knack for dialogue and a superb sense of pacing, and
his raging cynicism makes for several entertaining broadsides at recent
developments, particularly the Supreme Court decision regarding
political spending as speech."

About the Author

Walter Carlin has been a manager/director of cargo marketing for five airlines, an actor, a writer/producer for public radio, a loan officer, a US Army officer, a tour guide at Sea World, San Diego, and even a dreaded telemarketer. His experiences in the airline industry provided the basis for his first novel, "Incident Off Runway 31L." As an actor, Carlin did eight seasons of summer stock in an Equity company at the Sharon Playhouse in Sharon, Connecticut; has performed in off- and off-off-Broadway productions in New York City as well as numerous commercials in Southern California. He holds a bachelor of science degree from Fordham University.

Carlin's wry satirical novel reminds us of the absurdity, the venality, the greed, the stupidity, and the truth-is-stranger-than-fiction quality of our political landscape. You know the old saying: It would be funny if it weren't so true? Well, honestly, you don't know whether to laugh or cry as you boomerang from K Street to Hell and back with a naive, basically decent young protagonist who stumbles into the halls of power, tries to get ahead (and get the girl) and learns the hard way just what kind of unprincipled snakes he has fallen in with.

. . . political conservatives might squirm reading this satirical book about how our government is run by lobbyists nowadays.

I purchased it at a friend's suggestion to read on an overseas flight, and I wound up embarrassing my wife over a period of several hours by continually laughing out loud. The author is witty and has great insight into the workings of corporate, political and religious cultures. Funny, to be sure, but disconcerting, too.

These previous reviews must have been written by Mr. Carlin and other family members. I found it to be a total bore. Nothing but senseless dribble. He should go back to his tour guide position at Sea World, an author he is not.

When reading Beelzebub O'Brien, the reader has a smile on his face literally from the first page onward. Along with that, outbursts of laughter are evoked, surprisingly often. Lots of chuckling and a knowing nod of the head are routine. I cannot remember the last time I have enjoyed a book so much.

The writing is cleverly satirical, excellently informed vis-a-vis the inner workings of current day politics and financial dealings combined with theological notions. Often surprsingly irreverent, the characters are recognizable if you have been out in today's world.

Intelligently written by a virtually new author, Walter Carlin,(apparently this is only his second novel), the book is enormously appealing with its hilarious approach to time-honored themes.

This novel is way past a good read, it is a truly memorable work.
