4.0 out of 5 stars Loud, nasty, disgusting fun
Pungent Stench's "Been Caught Buttering" is a sickening yet hilarious romp through the wilds of early 90s Austrian death metal. This is not a band that takes themselves seriously; they're sort of a grindier philosophical (though not musical) comrade of Autopsy. Fairly simple songs are spiced with a silly take on gore lyricism, musical satire and large doses of good old...

Pungent Stench's "Been Caught Buttering" is a sickening yet hilarious romp through the wilds of early 90s Austrian death metal. This is not a band that takes themselves seriously; they're sort of a grindier philosophical (though not musical) comrade of Autopsy. Fairly simple songs are spiced with a silly take on gore lyricism, musical satire and large doses of good old rock. Some of the better tracks include "Splatterday Night Fever," "Sick, Bizarre, Defaced Creation" (which features a cool funk break that leads into a perfectly hackneyed shred solo) and "Happy Re-Birthday." The cover art is not for those with nervous stomachs. But for morbid-metal heads who like a good time, this is just the record.

5.0 out of 5 stars BLEEARGH!, August 21, 2006
By
Patrick Stott (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Been Caught Buttering (Audio CD)
This album has the sickest artwork ever, bar none. The picture of two grizzled old men, decapitated and kissing, is the perfect preparation for the audio filth contained within. `Been Caught Buttering' is pure musical perversion of the vilest kind, repulsive and degrading, or porn for deviants, depending on your point of view.

Everything on this album is distorted, from the instruments to the band's view of the world. Guitar, bass and drums merge in a morass of visceral Death Metal sludge, thick and almost impenetrable. There are two gears on this album: high speed, almost tune-free jackhammering, or a mid-paced grooving grind. Schrenk occasionally pulls some odd noises from his guitar in the place of solos, and Alex sometimes hits an extra drum or two, which is about as close as the band ever get to embellishing their music.

This is all about the vocals though. Schrenk gargles and groans his way through the deliciously revolting lyrics. How revolting? Well, "Shrunken And Mummified Bitch" is about, well, shrinking and mummifying a prostitute. "Splatterday Night Fever" graphically explores the putrescent consequences of casual sex. Elsewhere, there's rebirth by crawling through your mother's entrails, mass murder both sick and sexual, cannibalism, and hideous deformity. Most comic of everything on offer is "Sputter Supper". Alex's wife butchers a different neighbour for his supper every evening, including the annoying kid upstairs. Next on the menu is the new janitor.

`Been Caught Buttering' is a good old fashioned, old school piece of Death Metal obscenity. It has no socially redeeming features, zero melody, is rough as hell, and in places, it reeks of rancid gore. It couldn't be much better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Been Caught Buttering, December 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

My husband grew up on death and black metal, then one day he became a mature adult. Bad idea. He got rid of a lot of his 80's tapes and now he is back into the same music. He absolutely loved Pungent Stench and begged for it for his birthday. He loves it just as much today. They are terribly loud and the lyrics are down right disgusting. I am so glad I was able to buy a copy as there were not that many made in the first place. They are similar to groups from the Netherlands, but definitely have there own sound and gross lyrics. If you can find a copy and you like European death/black metal you will love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Been Caught Butchering, May 5, 2010

good stuff. Really heavy and disguisting...reminds you of your strange, eccentric friends who like talk about mutilation and decapitations. Its a freakin' circus, don't be fooled thinking this another carcass-ripoff goregrind band, death metal at its finest with a unique approach and style. The drummer must have dropped a couple terds recording this one. It could be the grooviest death metal album ever too. Delightful.

5.0 out of 5 stars sick violent austrians (genius!), March 10, 2010
This review is from: Been Caught Buttering (Audio CD)
This is the reissue of a 1992 album, with a worked-over cover and two extra tracks that weren't on it in the first version (the austrian/german one at least).

..at the time, me, as young impatient neo-grindcorian bought this cd because of...what? The cover of course. My mum said the cover was the sickest she'd ever seen (and I've a couple of sick album covers). When listening to it again though (after all that time!), I'm still convinced. In my opinion the best act on nuclear blast (although it's naturally been a while I've checked what's going on). Obviously malade lyrics & clearly death, not grind. Vocals like tasmanian devlish. And "Splatterday Night Fever" as the new soundtrack for the new "Friday Night Splatter" whatever.

At times (see song two, 0:59ff), this album can also get really grooovy..I would recommend this to any fresh death-metaller, who wants to listen to any unusual, non-scandinavian, average non-morrisound/dan seagrave sort of death metal, that, despite the speed at most times, could go for early doom-stoner-influence rock (see 90's cathedral meets early 90's sepultura at the butcher's vomitorium).

3.0 out of 5 stars Ear Popping !, January 16, 2004
This review is from: Been Caught Buttering (Audio CD)
When I first heard these guys it was on a soundtrack for a movie called "Traces of Death 3." It was pretty good but when I found the re-issued version to this album I was blown away. My ears hurt so bad after I jammed out I had to go outside and pop my ears like a zillion times just to hear right again.
The re-issued version to "Been Caught Buttering" is much better with two extra songs but the band itself is pretty good for a fast death grind core band. The only problem is that the songs start out excellent but as most of the songs progress further into themselves they tend to get less interesting and more painful for your ears.
Best song is "Brainpan Blues." Yeah the brainpan blues...picture that for a minute and see where your imagination takes you.
Overall this album is good for death metal fans but if you hate any kind of metal stay away.

The changes in the rhythm and the arrangements makes it better 'cause it keep your attention, and the song sounds much better, one of the best grind albums i've ever heard.
