I could have gotten this CD illegally but decided against it. I hate taking money away from artists who actually make excellent music so I waited and I'm glad I did. I went to see Johnny Flynn in Baltimore on October 25, 2010, the day before this CD was to be released and was able to not only purchase it but to purchase it directly from him! I gave him the money and he handed me the CD. I of course opened it and had him sign it immediately.

The CD is excellent. A Laurm has been in my CD changer for over a year and now I made room for this one as well. The fist song, Kentucky Pill is by far the most commercial on the CD and a lot different than the rest of the songs. He didn't play it at the show which confused me but it was just him and that kick ass guitar from the 40s he plays and that song might be tough to do without a band.

My favorite songs on Been Listening are Been Listening and The Water, both are amazing.

If you're already a fan of Johnny Flynn, you will LOVE this! If you're new, you will love this as well and be impressed with how much talent this guy has too. Cute as a button but you'll forget about that when you hear him sing because he's so good that hone of that matters. He sounds like no one and is pretty young for such lyrics. Depth usually comes with age but some how he got it early.

BUY THIS CD!!!! If you don't have A Laurm, GET THAT TOO! BOTH ARE EXCELLENT!

I don't really see the Mumford and Sons comparison. I love Mumford. They fit the "nu-folk" label. Mumford is an ode to American traditional music both musically (emphasis on banjo, stand-up bass) and lyrically (inspired by Steinbeck to write about the dust bowl years).
Flynn is different, his music and lyrics do not seem to be influenced by American folk. His music reminds me very much of traditional Irish and English music (sparing the usual lyrical content - horrors of The Famine and heartbreak of leaving the Old Sod for America). Which is not to say he's a traditional British Isles (if you want to lump Ireland in with the British Isles) music copy cat. But it is timeless music from an old soul like a lot of that music. How does a kid in his mid-20's come up with this stuff? He's frat boy cute, but when he opens his mouth, it's like it's coming from the ages. He's an extraordinary talent making extraordinary music.

This is not his best album, but it is very close. Very good music and I always enjoy his singing.

Good folk-style music with some beautiful melodies. Very easy listening. My favorite song is The Water. Could use a couple more fast paced songs.
