Been There, Could've Cared Less
on November 3, 2012
Bought the book for my sister because the title looked interesting. It's an easy, quick read, especially if you're used to sloughing through college-level texts.
Most of the book offers suggestions that are pretty much based off of common sense or courtesy/etiquette; or if not, you can figure it out fast enough when you actually get to college. Some of the anecdotes were amusing, and some were downright absurd.
One of the aspects I appreciated was how each of these tips came from someone else's experiences. Granted, not everything will apply to everyone, but there are some decent words of wisdom to be had. There were so many view points that were offered; some even seemed to be contradictory to each other. Most of those differences had to do with the speakers' unique personalities, values, and circumstances.
Overall, I didn't get much out of the book; I couldn't relate to most of it. My sister expressed a similar sentiment. While she did appreciate some of the advice, especially in regards to networking and talking to the professors, she couldn't use a lot of it because her college experience was/is so different than what these people seemed to have gone through.
We ended up giving it to a younger cousin who was looking for some general advice before heading off to college. Hopefully it was helpful for her, since I was sort of neutral towards the book.
