4.0 out of 5 stars Not a war album, but still very good. . ., January 31, 2002

This review is from: Beenie Man Meets Mad Cobra (Audio CD)
Okay, the main reason that I got this album is because I thought that it would be a war album, meaning I thought that it would be full of tunes that one artist had mad against the other, but its more like a greatest hits album of each from tunes of the early/mid 1990's. Mad Cobra of course wouldn't be Mad Cobra if he didn't include some war/gun tunes, and he did it better than anyone in the business at the time. Best tune from Cobra on the record is Dem Haffi Move, which to this day can hold a dance every once in a while. This album was made at the height of Cobra's power's, and when Beenie was still developing, on the other hand. But even then (Before "Who Am I"), he was still an excellent dj, and of course his specialty was gal tunes, check Tek Weh Yu Girl on this one, he's more politically armed in the rest of his tunes, which isn't his forte, bu still check Once a Year and Bury Yu Dead.
If you really really love dancehall, then this underrated gem is really a needle in the haystack, its a very good album. Obviously being a fan of both helps, but even in my case, huge Beenie fan and not much so in Cobra, I still like it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two of the Best in the Business, October 27, 2007

This review is from: Beenie Man Meets Mad Cobra (Audio CD)
I originally purchased this compilation on cassette in 1995. Side A ("Defend Apache" through "Tek Weh Yu Girl") belonged to Beenie Man, and Side B ("Name Yu Call" through "Gun Pop Off") belonged to Mad Cobra. This disc adds an additonal tune for each artiste ("Gun Finger" for Beenie and "Look Yu Man" for Cobra) but it adds them at the end after five Cobra songs in a row, so it sort of throws of the rotation. I'm not sure why the Shocking Vibes engineers couldn't just insert "Gun Finger" after "Tek Weh Yu Girl" so that the Beenie/Cobra format pioneered on the cassette could be preserved.

This compilation was made before either Beenie or Cobra attempted to crossover to an American/International audience (and for those of you who would argue that Cobra never attempted to crossover, I'd advise you you pick up his "Sexperience" album and then check me again) so all of the tunes are pure dancehall bangers. Of course, most of the tracks are concerned with gun talk or (to a lesser extent) the sexual conquests of the deejays, but this is par for the course with mid-90s dancehall.

Mad Cobra and Beenie Man are two of the best deejays in the business, and this compilation stands as a fine showcase for both of them.
