Book Description

January 19, 2011
Ever crack open a can of Chief Oshkosh of Wisconsin, or sample Pabst's Big Cat Malt Liquor? Remember the original St. Pauli Girl, Tennent's bevy of lager lovelies, or Olde Frothingslosh ("the pale stale ale with the foam on the bottom")? Presented alphabetically by brand, the nearly 500 cans collected here come from thirty countries and range from the iconic to the obscure to the downright bizarre. From long-forgotten brews to classic brands that have changed their look but never gone out of style, Beer offers a peek into the last century of beer culture, exploring what we drank, how we drank it, and why we picked it off the shelf. While it may not be as refreshing as a frosty cold can of Bud, cracking open this book is certain to stimulate beer lovers and design fans alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic gift for the beer lover April 10, 2011
Format:Paperback
While, I'm not an avid collector- I'm a loyal beer drinker and this book looks awesome next to all my mixology and cocktail titles. The creative direction is impressive, the photos are worthy of framed artwork and I never get bored flipping through it. I plan on getting my Dad and brother copies too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beer Book for the Rest of Us April 8, 2011
Format:Paperback
While I can see how this book would not fulfill the need of those avid collectors looking for a book to fill their particular niche - mint examples of obscure cans - it does do what it claims to do quite well. "Beer" is a portrait of a single collection with the focus less on obscurity and more on aesthetics. From a design perspective this book is nearly perfect - a collection of well shot graphics spanning, more or less, the better part of the 20th century. Beautifully laid out, "Beer" also presents a bit of history to support the photos. If you're a seasoned collector this book is probably not for you. However, for the designers out there who happen to love beer - or even those of you just looking for something nice to have on the coffee table - get psyched.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect For Vintage Design Lovers April 8, 2011
Format:Paperback
I'm not some serious beer can collector at all, yet I always appreciate beautiful vintage stuff. That's exactly why I adore this book. This book really shows off vintage art and design from old cans. I've never seen cans with cute goats and pumpkins illustrated on a beer can. The photos of the cans are big and gorgeous. The variety of the images is also great. I see some talk about the rust as a negative thing but I, as a non-collector, think it actually reveals part of the natural beauty of vintage cans.

They've got small interesting stories about some cans, which gives the book more warmth and personality.

The photography is amazing. Really highlights old beer-can designs well. As a designer, it's a great book to look through, especially for some inspiration. Good mix of brands too.
