I have visited Munich at least a dozen of times since then the iron curtain dropped down. It is very pity that I've read this book just now. Today I already know almost the every place and beer garden described in the book. And I think, that anyone going to Munich will find this book a must if he/she wants to find the best in German beers. Now Munich is a quite popular place to visit for many Russian tourists, especially during the Octoberfest time. But even if you are not going to Munich, this is a good read. The descriptions of the beer gardens are very entertaining and correct. Recommend it!

This is an absolutely terrific book, even if you're not a serious beer drinker. Everything you'll need to know about Munich and Bavaria is here; from how to ride the subway, how to greet people along the way, even how to correctly hold your stein without looking like a rookie. And what would a trip to the Hofbrauhaus be without singing? The words to the best beer drinking songs are in the back of the book! Day trips, food and beer reviews, entertainment and directions are all included. A word about beer gardens...don't be put off with the idea that they are just big parks serving beer to roudy and abusive drunks. The owners do not tolerate that kind of behavior. Beer gardens are a very civilized, cultural part of Bavaria, and they just so happen to be a lot of fun too. Ein, Zwei, Drei, g'suffa!!!

This book came in handy when I was in Munich a few years back (I have an older edition). The rating of the beers are pretty accurate. I loved the fact it gave directions on how to get to each place. It's especially nice for those of us who don't speak German. This book is a definate must have for beer drinking travelers. :)

I have gone through 3 versions of this book, been to Munich 6 times, and I still find new and exciting things to do by reading it.

The BDG2M allows you to sample the best Munich has to offer, and to go to places that tourists and locals love. Reading the book gives you a good idea of the wonderful culture, that IS Bavaria. It's not all about drinking beer, but the unique sense of community, family, and history you will find.

The directions to the beer halls are great. They are simple, easy to follow, and close to infallible. Of course, when there is beer at the end of the road, you tend not to get lost. ;-)

I applaud Larry in his everlasting devotion to this subject. Every edition is fresh, and new adventures await every turn of the page.

...on my recent visit to wonderful Munich. This book/guide WAS indespensible! Honest evaluations, excellent directions and commentary. A friend lent me his copy (previous edititon) and now I am so much oweing him a favor or two. I am very hapy with the new edition. But beware, even if you are not travelling to the city and read these pages, you certainly soon will want to -- makes for great reading, too.

I went to Munich for Oktoberfest this year -- got there on a Thursday night and left the following Wednesday. Monday was spent at Oktoberfest. That meant Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday we needed to find beer gardens! This book was the perfect guide -- you can find them by S or U-Bahn stop, even! The 2-for-one certificates were a special bonus. I logged all the beers I drank on the inside cover -- 35 beers in 5 days. Nine of those were the masse size. Burp. Highly recommended.

During my recent trip to Munich this book was of enormous help. We didn't have time to find out for ourselves which beer halls were good and which were so-so. This book saved us much time finding the best halls near our hotel. Anyone going to Germany(Munich)will find this book a must if you want to find the best in German Beer and hospitality..

The BDG2M has a tremendous cult following for all serious beer connoisseurs making a Munich pilgrimage. Even for the non-beer drinker, beer garden culture is a key element of understanding life in Munich. Hawthorne does excellent research, the reviews are fair, and the directions are solid and easy to follow. The new subway map in the 6th edition is a great addition. Of course you should confirm openings/closings with the locals before you trek to some of the out of way places, just to be sure. If you want to see the real Munich, follow his advice and venture beyond the Hofbrauhaus and meet some real Muencheners in Munich's beautiful beer gardens.

A great trend is to have someone working at the biergarten autograph their page of the book - proof you were here and makes a great personalized souvenir of your trip.

Great product. If you would like to get a good feel for Munich, visit some of the biergartens in the book. Pays for itself in less than two coupons (6 provided, although not all 6 locales are convenient). Interesting info on Munich and its biergartens, and getting around the city (and a few great locations outside of the city, i.e. Salzburg). This is the 2nd edition that I've owned.
