5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Handbook February 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As a young woman I had the privilege of living in Germany for several years. My very first breakfast in Germany was a bottle of Licher Bier. Nobody's household goods had arrived so we "drank coffee" sharing one cup between a dozen or so of us, filling in with "flippie bottles" of the local beer while we waited for our turn at the cup. Never mind. Beer for breakfast once in your life isn't a bad thing. What I wouldn't give for one of those wonderful German beers now - the ones they don't import.

I've considered making my own beer several times. One of the highlights of my life every summer as an adolescent and teenager was the making of the family supply of root beer. We would mix the extract with sugar and water in a huge trashcan, from which eventually the root beer would make its way into individual bottles that we placed out on the lawn all around the foundation of Grandma & Grandpa's house to ferment. Every once in a while one would blow up. Those that survived were eagerly carried along to the drive-in movies, on picnics and down to the lake to fish. We always ran out of root beer long before we ran out of summer. These days I know far more about yeast and fermentation and growing bacteria than I did then (I'm a medical scientist by profession) and frankly, I'm a bit amazed we survived LOL. Can you imagine the fuss those exploding bottles would cause today?

Clive Fletcher quite obviously knows just exactly what he is talking about when it comes to brewing beer. Beer Kit Magic is an extensive manual that will guide you through every step of the process. Follow his advice and you'll not have exploding bottles. Will I try making my own beer? Maybe come summer.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book for novices but not much more October 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It covers beer kits and adjuncts to beer kits which is great for someone wanting to improve their kit beers.
Doesn't offer enough for intermediate brewers but it delivers on its title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference for Beginner Homebrewers January 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book contains lots of great information on extract kit brewing. The book is laid out in such a way that anyone who wants to make great beer at home at a great price can pick a a brewing kit, follow this book, and make wonderful tasting beer. I like the fact that he goes through all the pieces of equipment that one might need with quick explanations as to why you need it. He then goes on about different ways you can modify the instructions of the kit to make even better beer the next time, and how the things you change can affect the beer.
