More About the Author

Daniel Hartis was born and raised in the small town of Waxhaw, NC, just south of Charlotte. He didn't truly experience good beer, however, until he moved to Asheville to go to school. While working for the school paper, he was asked to write about the many microbreweries that called the city home.

After graduating, Daniel returned to Charlotte with a newfound interest in craft beer. In the years to come, Charlotte would see brewery after brewery pop up, and in 2011 Daniel founded CharlotteBeer.com, a site devoted to Charlotte's breweries, beer bars, and events. While that site is devoted to Charlotte's current craft beer climate, Daniel has also extensively researched the history of the city's brewing scene, and in 2013 he wrote "Charlotte Beer: A History of Brewing in the Queen City." He followed that title with "Beer Lover's The Carolinas," which was published in April of 2014.

When he is not drinking or writing about craft beer, he enjoys spending time with his wife, son, and daughter.

Its the perfect companion for a brewery day trip.
S. Reyes
It has a one or two page description of a brewery, some of its popular offerings and many times a great color picture of a favorite beer or the location.

This book takes you on a great tour of the breweries and brewpubs in both North and South Carolina.

Format: Paperback
The book is a great guide to most of the breweries/brewpubs in the Carolinas. Its broken up into regions complete with maps, and some details about the brewery, as well as some of their beers. For the homebrewer there are some recipes on how to make a clone of some of the beers described in the book. There are also some recipes for some of the great food from the brewery/brewpub's kitchens. It is easy to read, and full of beautiful pictures that make you want to hop in the car and hit the road and visit some of these breweries. Its the perfect companion for a brewery day trip. If you're a craft beer lover, I highly recommend this book!

Daniel has poured his heart and soul into capturing the unique aspects of each bar, brewery, and brewpub that he highlights. While he's the first to acknowledge that it's impossible to include every beer-serving establishment, this book goes a long way toward introducing readers to tons of great spots across both NC and SC. After vacationing near Andrews, NC for several years, I only found out about Andrews Brewing Company because of this book. Now I know that Nantahala isn't the only go-to spot for great beer near the cabin! Though I've been to most of the spots in Charlotte, this is going to be my guidebook for the rest of our two state region.

And lest you think that reading about dozens of drinking holes could become tedious, Daniel's writing is always accessible and engaging. With Eric Gaddy's wonderful photography showcasing the recommended beers, be sure to have a drink handy while enjoying this one. You're gonna get thirsty!

This books presents a thorough look at the breweries in the region, giving a bit of history for each one in an area where the craft brew scene has exploded in the past decade. I particularly love the suggested pub crawl itineraries with associated maps. There is also a calendar of beer festivals provided along with some food recipes at the end that incorporate the local craft brews. There are even some clone beer recipes provided for the homebrewer courtesy of some of the breweries. I will say much of the focus is on NC rather than SC though. However, this was to be expected given the vast number of breweries in that state.

Overall, a very enjoyable read that I highly recommend for any beer enthusiast especially new transplants and tourists. This book will definitely be riding along with me during my next visit to my home state!
