5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect guide to New England Beer! July 23, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've lived in New England for my whole life. I'm also an avid craft beer fan. So why would I purchase a book about New England beer? The explosion of the craft beer industry has led to the opening of dozens of new breweries, bars and brew-pubs. There are so many awesome beer venues now and this book is the perfect guide to help you find them. The book is great for travelers visiting the area, as well as long time residents like myself.

"Beer Lover's New England" is broken down into chapters by state. The chapters are sub-divided by:
* Breweries
* Brew-pubs
* Bars

Whether you're looking for a fantastic beer bar in Rhode Island or a list of breweries in Vermont, you know exactly where to flip to.

There are two parts of the book that might interest you if you are considering or already into home-brewing:
1. Interested in brewing your own beer, but don't want to buy all the equipment? There's a chapter that talks about "brew on premise" businesses that will teach you how to brew and also allow you to come in and brew using their equipment!
2. There are a small handful (3) beer clone recipes for home brewers. The three beers are: Cambridge Brewing Company's Sgt. Pepper, Wormtown's Sweet Tat and Tullycross Tavern's Simarillo IPA.

I'm personally not a brewer, so I'm not terribly interested in these sections. I will say that the book is light on the clone recipes. This is more of bonus material than anything else.

There is a section on cooking with beer. It includes 11 recipes. In a cool twist, the recipes are for meals found on the menus of some of the brew pubs listed in the book.

My favorite chapter of the book is about pub crawls. The author provides recommended crawls in 8 New England cities, including street maps!

The book is written by a life-long Massachusetts resident who has been writing about craft beer for 6 years and has been enjoying it for a total of 13. He clearly knows his beer!

5.0 out of 5 stars The essential guide for beer tourism in New England February 18, 2013
Format:Paperback
This is a fantastic book to keep on the coffee table, night stand, or in the car: the author provides a well-organized series of snapshot profiles of the rich craft brewery culture in New England. This is a great book to use to plan a weekend trip to Portland, Portsmouth, Boston, and the many small towns that celebrate independent beer making (and enjoying a creative and tasty drink).

The author also methodically highlights the origin stories for many of the breweries as well as some of the signature and interesting beers produced by each craft brewery. The book is organized by state with excellent maps showing where each brewery or brewpub is located. Finally, he provides useful information on which breweries offer tours and when.

Overall, a fantastic and well-written guide.
