5.0 out of 5 stars Beck's 2nd Single from Mellow Gold Shines, August 9, 2003
By Paul Allaer (Cincinnati) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
"Beercan" is the 2nd single off of Beck's breakthrough album "Mellow Gold", 5 tracks (24 min.) of which 4 are not on the album. "Beercan" is a great song, not as "essential" as "Loser" obviously, but a great dance tune.

The 4 extra tracks are what make this a necessary addition to any Beck fan's collection. "Got No Mind" is a lazy accoustic song, just great. "Asskizz Powergrudge" is Beck at his experimental best. "Totally Konfused" is another accoustic song, just great. "Spanking Room" is a 9 min. blowout of alterna rock, totally in line with 1994 (when this EP was issued).

Beck has done many different things, but he was never better than in the "Mellow Gold" era. By all means, buy this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, our drummer got food poisoning, January 8, 2009
This is a great single, all the B-sides are good enough to be on Mellow Gold.

Got No Mind:
A slow electric "Pay No Mind." well, not exactly, there are more verses and the only remaining likliness to Pay No Mind is the melody and a couple varitions of the original lyrics. I like both versions for different reasons.

Asskizz Powergrudge (Payback! '94):
This song would almost be scary if there wasn't a hint of humor in it. It's acoustic with angry lyrics and grunted vocals. At the end of the song it gets wild with loud noises, bells, and a bit of screaming.

Totally Confused:
One of Beck's finest songs of his early days. There are few lyrics, the guitar is a real simple melody, the drums are simple as well, but that's the genious of it. The backing vocals and drums (I think) are done by That Dog. They also were on the single "Steve Threw Up." The violin is the perfect addition as well. Great great track. It's one of those feelings I can't really discribe well, but it's there. Very... 90's.

Spanking Room:
And suddenly this comes on. Very loud, very cool. Beck is shouting the whole time so it's pretty much impossible to figure out what he's saying, but I don't think that matters. The guitar is almost apocalyptic, if that makes sense.

Loser (Pseudo-Muzak Version):
The secret track. If you've heard Loser enough to remember the melody then you'll enjoy this. It was recorded live and it sounds to me like beck has a tape of Loser going with a drum machine over it. At the end Beck explains that their drummer got food poisoning.
