5.0 out of 5 stars Can I give this recording 5 1/2 stars?, November 9, 2010

This review is from: Beethoven: Cello Sonatas Nos. 1 & 2, Opp. 5:1,2 (Audio CD)
No? Too bad, because I'd like to as this is an outstanding recording on all fronts.

The music: the two Beethoven Op. 5 cello sonatas are incredibly imaginative and powerful works. It's astounding to think they were written in 1796 by a 26-year-old composer who a) may have been only composing for 6 years (if Maynard Solomon is correct about his ceasing to write music in his later teenage years) and b) who created the classical cello sonata with this set as no significant precedessors exist (correct me if I'm wrong here). Both works are basically in two movements where the first movement is extended through slow introductions and reprises. The Op. 5 no. 1 sonata opening mvt in particular is complex and extended. If you like Beethoven and you haven't heard these works, don't dismiss them - it's first-rate music. The CD also contains two pleasant variation sets based on arias from Mozart's The Magic Flute.

The performance: where do I start? Maisky and Argerich play with a freedom that sometimes makes me think they are improvising as they go along. It's fresh, impulsive and accomplished all at the same time. This is one of those performances that redefine what great classical chamber music performing is about.

Sonics are excellent. (And I am picky.)

Simply a great CD.
