I bought this set to familiarize myself with the 32 sonatas. I was previously only familiar with the more famous pieces/movements. But this set WAS extremely cheap and I really enjoyed the companion cheap EMI reissue of the Beethoven Symphonies. So I can't compare Heidsieck to other pianists. However, since there were no reviews here, and I really enjoyed this set, I figured I'd toss in my 2 cents.

The technical - these are circa 1970 recordings and there's a fair amount of hiss. But it's not the kind of hiss that stifles the sound of the music. Heidsieck can make occasional faint humming or grunting noises - not too noticeable - not Gould-esque. One track has 2 complete data dropouts - this might just be my copy. I examined the ripped wave forms in Audacity and there is just no data at all there. The dropout lasts for only a second or two but it's enough to ruin the track. One of the movements has a tone shift downwards at a key juncture in the piece - it doesn't sound like an edit. Perhaps a cat came in and sat on the reels. I actually like the effect as it makes you sort of perk up, but it's definitely not an audiophile's dream. Also, I notice pitch variations between the sonatas. This is 60s reel-to-reel tech so...it's not dramatic but would probably give a perfect pitch fanatic a fit.

The pieces themselves are so clearly played - each note is distinguishable and clear - nothing is muddied in a legato jumble. I don't know if the pieces themselves impart this quality or if it is a quality of Heidsieck's playing. However it seems to make the works more linked to the past (of Beethoven) than being grand romantic path-breakers, which I enjoy. You will feel smarter whilst listening to this, as opposed to needing to duck out to the loo for a good cry.
