This review is from: Beethoven: Für Elise; Eroica-Variationen (Audio CD)
This is basically a review of the Eroica Variations. I like Alfred Brendel's sense of humour and refusal to overemphasise. There is his usual lightness of touch and fluid playing. There is also some playfulness, which keeps you floating along. I miss the more emphatic opening and certain excentricities of Gould; and the sparkling energy of some more contemporay performers, because I have a wicked predeliction for an Eroic Eroica. Fur Elise seems to me to be perfectly executed, beautiful but not cloyingly so as his fingers really seem to caress the notes. This is a rightly popular and highly regarded recording of Brendel's.
