5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fidelio!
I own many versions of Beethoven's only opera; this is my absolute favorite Fidelio.

Vickers, Ludwig, Frick, and Berry are in excellent form and Klemperer conducts expertly. This performance gives me goosebumps every time I play it.

Don't bother with this version if you can absolutely help it - get Karajan's with Dernesch and Vickers. It's SO much better. At least listen to and compare both versions before you decide. That's what I did, and they're like night and day. Even if this had the superior sound quality and mixing (which it certainly doesn't) it would still be inferior for its lack of...

Don't bother with this version if you can absolutely help it - get Karajan's with Dernesch and Vickers. It's SO much better. At least listen to and compare both versions before you decide. That's what I did, and they're like night and day. Even if this had the superior sound quality and mixing (which it certainly doesn't) it would still be inferior for its lack of interpretive depth. Unless you want Beethoven to sound Baroque, avoid this version.
