Elegant and Energetic, April 15, 2011

The Orpheus play Beethoven's ballet with elegance and energy, emphasizing that this music is for the dance. This isn't Beethoven's greatest, but it certainly is very enjoyable, especially as played with verve and precision by this superb chamber group which understands the style and sound of this music perfectly. There are a number of lovely solos played by flute, basset horn (bass clarinet), and oboe which are really outstanding on this record, but the entire ensemble plays with great polish and well as panache and provides plenty of weight for the tuttis. Sound is excellent, and the notes (as usual for DG) are very informative.
