Book Description

Life&Times April 1, 2005
This is one title in a series of short, illustrated biographies. They tell the stories of those who have shaped our present and our past, from Beethoven to Dietrich, from Einstein to Churchill and suitable for students and the general reader. Ludvig van Beethoven is a legendary figure in world culture, but who is the man behind that legend? Geck offers a vivid portrait of a difficult but fascinating man with a tangled and still controversial love life. He explores Beethoven's place in Vienna's music scene and in Western musical history, with particular emphasis on the development of the piano sonatas, the symphonies and the late string quartets. This is an authoritative, yet accessible biography of a self-styled cultural hero, presented warts and all.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'Exquisitely produced ...this short biography eschews meaningless psychobabble in favour of an excellent overview of the musician's life and times interspersed with short but incisive discussions of some of the major works. Particularly interesting is Geck's concentration on his subject as a working composer rather than a genius who floated entirely aloof from quotidian concerns'. -- Steven Poole The Guardian 20030301 --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Together, they form a superb modern library of biography. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect research companion on Beethoven, January 3, 2007
Martin Geck, a professor of musicology at the University of Dortmund in Germany, has produced the definitive work on Beethoven. You can't go wrong with anything from the Life & Times series. Each book on cultural figures who have shaped our lives and times is thoroughly researched by Martin Geck, author of numerous works on classical music. This series contains personal anecdotes and information for the music lover and history buff, and enough technical information to satisfy serious student or researchers. I recently recommended this volume and two other Life & Times volumes for film research. It's also a great gift coupled with a CD of classics.
