The Definitive Recording,
By
This review is from: Beethoven: Mass in C; Elegiac Song; Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage (Audio CD)
I'm often suprised that Beethoven's C major mass is not more popular. It's true that it's not the Missa Solemnis, but Shaw understands that. This is perhaps the definitive recording of this wonderful work, with solid performance from everyone, beautiful solo work, and careful conducting in an overall sunny style very appropriate to this work. The serious is not underplayed, and Shaw has done a great job of bringing out the delicacy that so many others want transformed into bombast. Recommended!

I bought this for the track "Calm Sea And Prosperous Voyage" having heard it as an opener when the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Baltimore Choral Arts Society performed Beethoven's 9th. Having never heard Mass in C, I didn't know what to expect. I love it and have to say that it's a real, real shame that this is overshadowed by his other works. What a powerful, beautiful wonder of a piece.
The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's performance is peppy, sharp. The recording so faithfully captures all the vocal and orchestral nuances. The soloists are are so powerful and work so well together in the Gloria. The choir work as one beautiful unit. It's a wonder to hear them all practically whisper at once and later sing in full volume.

The sacred, Beethoven and Robert Shaw. How can you go wrong with this combination? Warning: May result in high level of peace, relaxation and calm. Oh, and a spiritual connection with your Higher Power.
