5.0 out of 5 stars Elegant and transparent, July 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Beethoven: Piano Trios Nos. 5 - Geister, & 7 - Archduke, Opp. 70:1, 97 (Audio CD)
At a certain level of performance, it's not a question of what you can play or add to the music, but how you eliminate the non essential. The best performances of the past masters are as simple and direct as possible; treating the composer not as god, but as a brother musician. It's really more a matter of getting out of the way and letting music have her say. I feel that this trio has accomplished this in this recording of these justly famous works. Beethoven's genius shines through and around Beethoven, and none of it is obscured by the Beaux Arts Trio. The recorded sound is as good as my mid range equipment can reveal, and I expect it would survive even closer scrutiny.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Haunted Sound!, June 7, 2003

Vincent Zheng (Taichung City, Taiwan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beethoven: Piano Trios Nos. 5 - Geister, & 7 - Archduke, Opp. 70:1, 97 (Audio CD)
It's been a while that one can almost forget the pleasure of remembering the reminiscent melodies in which the elegance of performance goes beyond technical and marketing veneer. The selections of the Beethoven Piano Trios in this CD are sensually evocative. It's hard when one hums the refrain part of the Andante catabile of "Arhduke" without dipping oneself into the beautiful memories. The music stirs your heart!
The arts of performance and modern digital technology are complimentary here. What Beaux Arts Trio has achieved is simply timelessness!
