Ohlsson's the one for modern Beethoven,
By
This review is from: Beethoven Sonatas Vol. 8 (Audio CD)
I have all of the Ohlsson Beethoven albums -- which add up to 8 at this time. I have given them good reviews elsewhere. My concern is that "other" interpreters offer all 32 on 8 discs. I naively believed that 8 (discs) add up to 32 (sonatas) as with Gulda or Kempff. Not so !!
OK, for Garrick's quality, musicianship, and interpretations (which in many cases sound like he started with no preconceived notions and went entirely by the score -- no existing traditions) I am willing to invest in a couple more discs. BUT these have been out for going-on two years. So when are we going to get the balance of the 32? Emil Gilels was recording these for DGG but died before the project was complete. Last I knew, Garrick seemed to be in good health. So he needs to get back to the studio and cross the finish line (please...). Meanwhile, this is some of the freshest Beethoven available.
