7 of 8 people found the following review helpful By Grady Harp HALL OF FAMETOP 100 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on January 7, 2011
Performances of the Beethoven symphonies are consistently in the repertoire of all major orchestras throughout the world and among the most popular is the 7th. It is rich in dance rhythms, sharp contrasts, surprises and a dramatic ending. In the 200 years since its composition (1811) there have been many changes in instrumental refinement, in philosophy of performance and in attempting to make the symphony relevant to current times and performance standards. For instance, currently Gustavo Dudamel is polishing his interpretation with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in preparation for their European tour. That interpretation is delicate and fresh and compelling.

But it is helpful, on anniversary dates like this 200th one, to return to the sound that Beethoven's symphonies created at their birth (though Beethoven's deafness was already to the point of not being afforded that luxury) and for that outing comes this fine recording by Roger Norrington conducting the London Classical Players from the year 1988. The sound is thin, somewhat tinny, and a bit too academically oriented to appeal to the romantic interests of today's audience, but the performance is solid and allows us the opportunity to appreciate the various instrumental choirs in conversation the way Beethoven imagined. it is crisp, light and airborne as are the performances of the 'Coriolan' and 'Egmont' Overtures. Hearing these recordings reminds us of the progressive history of the sound of modern instruments and how they color these compositions and there will always be a welcome place for Norrington's research and performances to round out our appreciation of the genius of Beethoven. Grady Harp, January 11

If you like Beethoven's Symphony 7, this is my favorite version. Ever since I started listening to classical music I've always appreciated this version of Beethoven's 7th Symphony. Roger Norrington and the London Classical Players render a version of this piece that I measure all other versions from. I must admit, I have not heard all versions from different conductors and orchestras, but so far none have mastered a better version of Beethoven's 7th than Roger Norrington and The London Classical Players. I strongly recommend this version for those who have not heard this piece before.
