No. 9, April 20, 2006

I have another version of No. 9 with Zubin Mehta conducting, which I prefer as far as the orchestration. However, the singing in the last movement is top notch in this recording. I love Martti Talvela. I don't know of another bass who's voice is as rich as Talvela's. Lucia Popp, as usual, is wonderful. I really enjoy Joan Sutherland's version (the one she did with Marilyn Horn in the early 60s), but her German was never that good. I recommend this CD just for the last movement.
