Editorial Reviews

This reissue in harmonia mundi's hmGold series features the members of Trio Wanderer as soloists in one of Beethoven's most unusual works. Some historians and critics have opined that the enigmatic Triple Concerto may have been intended as a vast rhapsody intended to show off the virtuosity of three hand-picked soloists. However, when a piano trio of the caliber of Trio Wanderer turns its attention to the work, it takes on a quite different aspect: it becomes a genuine ''Concerto for trio and orchestra.'' First released in 2001, the disc also includes the incidental music from Egmont with soprano Anja Harteros accompanied by James Conlon and the Gurzenich Orchestra.

It might seem a waste of money to buy a CD for only half of the music, but that's the deal, here, and it's a great deal, at that. The Trio Wanderer is at the top of its game, and almost any other trio's game, in its performance of the Triple Concerto. James Conlon and the GOKP are very able accompanists (for that really is what the orchestra is in this work) to the trio, and they do a fine job of shaping the piece. I've played this numerous times, and have never felt shortchanged.

As for the Egmont, Maestro Conlon seems to have no interest at all in anything other than the overture, which is well-played, but rushed, thus setting the tone for the rest of the music, which is even more rushed. Anja Harteros is a fine soprano, but she gets no real support from the conductor and the orchestra. And with none of the spoken text being included (except some from the penultimate melodrama), there is no sense of unity, and little drama. If you have never heard the entire Egmont, I strongly recommend the London CD (remastered from the tapes used on the original LP) with soprano Pilar Lorengar (one of the finest singers of her time), and George Szell conducting the Vienna Philharmonic. Klaus-Jürgen Wussow is an actor who shapes and molds the spoken text: sentimental at one turn, declamatory at another. The recording is nearly 50 years old, but you won't find a better one.

So, buy this for the Concerto, and enjoy some marvelous music-making. Then skip the rest. It's what I do, and I don't mind doing it that way at all :-)
