Editorial Reviews

Review

It's a wonderful CD, especially for those of you who love classical music and if you've yet to share the greats with your children, this would be the perfect introduction! Richard Perlmutter is a musical genius and his humor and deep passion for these great masterpieces has brought them back to life for these younger generations to see how exquisite they once were, and are again. --Outnumbered 3-1

Parents need to know that the Beethoven's Wig series has won countless awards for its music, which introduces kids to the classics in an exciting way -- with words! This CD includes funny, kid-friendly lyrics that truly enhance the familiar piano melodies. Parents will enjoy the music as much as their kids and appreciate the refresher course on musicians such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Debussy. --Common Sense Media

Beethoven's Wig: Sing Along Piano Classics is a wonderful introduction to the joys of classical music; beautifully performed. Highly recommended. --Midwest Book Review

Product Description

In this delightful collection, Beethoven's Wig takes on the greatest piano hits of classical music with Richard Perlmutter's witty, irreverent and highly entertaining lyrics. The album features piano works by Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms, Debussy, Stravinsky and Mussorgsky, as well as modern composers Schoenberg and Cowell. Perlmutter also serves up humorous lyrical renditions of The Entertainer and Chopsticks. Recorded at the legendary Village Recorders in Los Angeles, and at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at the Music Center, this album features lead vocals by Perlmutter, backed by his all-star cast of vocalists Elin Carlson, Jennifer Barnes, Jonathan Mack and Michael Geiger. All piano performances are by Grant Gershon. Opening a door to classical music for young and old, Beethoven's Wig is one of the most honored groups in family music, with 46 national awards and 4 Grammy Award Nominations. The instrumental version of each piece is included without lyrics.

5.0 out of 5 stars A return to form, a lot of fun. Smart and silly lyrics. January 24, 2012
Format:Audio CD
While the concept of Richard Perlmutter's Beethoven's Wig is kinda genius -- take famous classical melodies and attach often-funny lyrics to them -- I'd kinda found the past couple entries a little lacking, at least compared to the first couple albums. It was the Die Hard of kids music -- starting out strong, but no longer essential.

Well, John McClane won't head back to theatres for a fifth time until February 2013, but Perlmutter has brought back his own creation for a fifth time with Sing Along Piano Classics. If this new album is any indication, you may want to keep that weekend free for moviegoing because Bruce Willis, er, Richard Perlmutter brings back his "A" game.

As the title suggests, Perlmutter uses famous piano melodies as the basis for his "Weird Al"-like parodies, and many of them hit the mark. "A Piano Is Stuck in the Door" reworks Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer" to amusing effect, while "Poor Uncle Joe" appropriately talks about death in Frederic Chopin's Funeral March. A death of a car, but still. Most of the melodies are very familiar, and Perlmutter tweaks that familiarity on that in some cases -- lots of nonsense syllables in his version of W.A. Mozart's Sonata in C Major, or a clucking chicken in "My Little Chicken." And his take on Mozart's "Alla Turca" (unfamiliar name, but a familiar melody), which he calls "Mozart Makes Kids Smart," is slyly sarcastic ("Instantly / kids can be / the Little Einsteins we expect now / Did you know / with more Mozart / there'd be no child left behind?").

Given the occasionally tricky wordplay, the album is most appropriate for kids ages 6 and up. The 45-minute album features both versions with and without the lyrics.

Absolutely as good as the previous four in the Beethoven's Wig series! My children and I love it! This CD sticks to piano favorites, but also introduces a couple of more -- I don't know the correct term -- maybe "modernistic"? selections. A piece by Schoenberg is one example. Another is "Amiable Conversation" by Cowell. Perlmutter's version is titled "Bang, Bang, Bang" and the lyrics include: "Will somebody stop that bang, bang, banging the piano? It's annoying. It's not music. It's noise." Really funny, and definitely introduces kids to a different style than I recall on any of the previous CDs. You can't go wrong with any of this series!

If you're already familiar with the genius of Richard Perlmutter, you and your children's delight from Beethoven's Wig is about to be extended. If you're not, don't miss the earlier CDs in the series, which are now well established classics that for so many reasons earned Grammy nominations and numerous other awards. What makes this newest Beethoven's Wig so interesting is Perlmutter's focus on piano masterpieces with a huge range from simpler to complex, but always making each piece utterly accessible and endlessly entertaining for little ones. While instilling a love for classical music in your kids, this CD will take them (and you) on a trip to the moon with Debussy, on a merry go round with Mozart, and on a Pony Express ride with Schumann - places even the composers themselves haven't been until offered a ride on Perlmutter's amazing imagination. These and ten other enthralling little stories, married to gems of the classical piano repertoire (also on the same CD in versions without the lyrics) make for a very generous serving of children's entertainment that begs to be heard over and over again. Hard to go wrong this Christmas with this or any of the Beethoven's Wig collection. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars So much fun! April 5, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
We have been listening to the Bethoven's Wig series at my house going on 8 years now. My children never get tired of the songs, and they have a true love of classical music which I attribute to this series.

Anyway- we've been waiting for the next cd to come along, and the Easter Bunny left a copy in my daughter's basket, much to her delight.
It's been played every day since Easter. Near the cd player I found a strange list of numbers... daughter explained that it was her ranking (from 1-10) of how much she liked each song. Some were rated 14 (she is eight).

Can't beat that!
