I liked the premise of this book, reminding me of the television shows Alias and La Femme Nikita. It's cool to see an African American heroine in this case. Like Sydney and Nikita, Alex is a heroine you care about but is more than able of taking care of herself and anyone who happens to be her enemy.

The love story was sweet and involving. You do want things to work out between Alex and Josh, hoping that they will find each other amongst the chaos of Alex trying to find out who she is and trying to stay alive as her enemies strive to do her in. And Josh is personally involved himself, as his ex-wife is one of the people gunning for Alex.

If readers are looking for an action-filled romance that has a sweet love story at heart, they will love this book. I hope to read more from Ms. Lori.

This is the first book I've read by this author and it won't be my last. Before Dawn Breaks is the story of two agents caught in the crossfire of a corrupt Senator. Hero Josh Mayer is assigned to protect assassin Alexandra Lyons and the two become entrenched in a battle over money that threatens their lives. This is a really good book. The pacing is rapid, dialogue snappy, and Ms. Lori writes such believable action scenes that you can really see the fighting. The plot is plausible and the activities of these agents and the agency to which they belong is wholly believable. Furthermore, Ms. Lori sets up the romance with strong, emotional characters--even the villains were well developed. There's a plot twist I totally didn't see coming and you just have to read it to see how good it is.

I loved this!!! A great storyline with enough romance, suspense and action to keep you holding on to the very end!!! This is how I prefer my heroines - kick ass and ready for anything!! That car chase scene where she leans out the window in the middle of that gunfight had me conjuring up images of Angelina Jolie in "Wanted" - loved it!!!!!!!! The H/H were a perfect match! If you're looking for a romance story with with a lot of action, suspense, and one heck of a car chase scene thrown in, this is the one for you!!!!!!!!!!

Before Dawn Breaks by Rae Lori is a book about Alex, a female assassin. Simple, direct, and to the point? Not actually. It combines a spy novel, a crime novel, an action novel, and a love story. It is to some extent convoluted and a bit ragged and disjointed in presentation.

So is life.

Probably the life of a professional killer would be more complex than that of a "normal" person. Lori seems to take that into account in her writing, jumping from point to point and sometimes leaving the reader wondering what's going on. Understandable. The protagonist isn't sure what's going either, at least not for most of the book.

When Alex discovers her job isn't exactly what she thought, and her targets may not be the kind of people she signed on to eliminate, she is suddenly in danger from the people she's working for. With a loss of memory caused by an explosion intended to kill her, she wakes to a whole new life and with a different personality.

She meets Josh, a restaurant owner. They fall in love. A second attempt on her life forces her to accept the fact that neither she nor Josh are what they seem to be. Like her, he was a government agent, one who now considers protecting her his role in life.

At this point things become complicated. "Friends" turn out to be enemies. "Enemies" become friends. Petty jealousies become deadly, and a dishonest senator who wants to be president is pulling more strings than he should be able to.

In real life we seldom know all the details about the things going on around us. If you insist on having everything spelled in in absolute terms, this probably isn't your kind of book. If you can accept the fact we never know everything about everything, and the author writes her novel to reflect this, with plenty of action and a satisfying conclusion, I think you will like Before Dawn Breaks.
