5.0 out of 5 stars As beautiful as its counterpart.
As with the sister cd "After the Night Falls", this is beautiful relaxing ambient music.
I too wonder why the 2 cd's were not simply released as a single disc, given their length. This way however you do get the individual and complimentary cover art!!
Fans should also try the soundtrack to "Mysterious Skin".

Amazing how little has changed in either style or substance since "The Moon and the Melodies". While the work here is pretty (not beautiful) it is also familiar beyond formula and sentimental beyond any and all reasonable assessment. If nothing else, this release and its nocturnal twin prove that the single, most profound collaboration of Harold Budd's remarkable...

5.0 out of 5 stars East of Midnight with Budd & Guthrie, January 20, 2008

Harold Budd & Robin Guthrie, a pair of legendary names in the ambient music world, created a two-album theme of music and emotions with Before The Day Breaks and After The Night Falls. Creating a kind of minimalist sound with these albums, the pair have created relaxing ambient music demonstrating that sometimes less is more, and better. Both are excellent for unwinding after work, for quiet times and perhaps even catching your breath at work. This is a definite recommendation for those who want their music a little calmer & quieter.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for fans, December 6, 2007
This review is from: Before The Day Breaks (Audio CD)
If you are a fan of the Cocteau's Moon and the Melodies, you will enjoy this continuation. Sure, Budd and Guthrie have both had many stylistic changes over the years, and have experimented with various mutations, but there's no denying that when they collaborate, as on MM, something beautiful happens. Fans and newcomers will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peace Within, May 29, 2009
This review is from: Before The Day Breaks (Audio CD)
The cd "Before The Day Breaks" allows one to just be still and melt into the music. A wonderful de-stresser. I find it beautiful to listen to while I cross stitch or when I go to bed. Just what the soul needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chill And Wash, April 6, 2008
This review is from: Before The Day Breaks (Audio CD)
The Collaboration continues. This second installment of the binary 2007 release from Harold Budd and Robin Guthrie brings more sonic landscaping and oceanic tumult from the two arguably best figures of the genre. More sharply focused and signatory than their "After The Night Falls", this album delivers that evocative Harold Budd mysticism and Robin Guthrie's guitar washes in full effect. Fans of Marconi Union and O Yuki Conjugate must have this; fans of both Messrs. Budd and Guthrie should already have this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Ambient music you will indulge in, April 1, 2008
This review is from: Before The Day Breaks (Audio CD)
I barely became aware of the release of this album in early 2008 (it came out in mid-2007). Yet, since I found out about it, it's become a fixture in my iTunes playlist. The ethereal sound of Harold Budd (one of the early creators of Ambient music along with Brian Eno) blends in impeccably with the guitar work of Robin Guthrie (of Cocteau Twins fame) to yield an album that you will indulge in time and again.

Along with the companion After The Night Falls, this is an album you will find yourself listening in times of trouble and in times of joy equally, non-intrusive music that you can work to and write to as much as you can mellow to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poetry and Melodies, March 3, 2008
This review is from: Before The Day Breaks (Audio CD)
I got this cd and "after the night fall" just 10days before the official release from Darla records and then take it with me on ipod nano to my travel in Egypt. Cant describe being 10days on a boat from Cairo to Aswan listening these two album on the Nile. Is very different from "mysterious skin" and "moon&melodies". Honestly, Mysteious skin has much more melodic and nice tracks, these dual album concept is very original but harded to listen in some parts. But worth to buy it. Hope Robin and Budd will do othere cds like this

While the work here is pretty (not beautiful) it is also familiar beyond formula and sentimental beyond any and all reasonable assessment. If nothing else, this release and its nocturnal twin prove that the single, most profound collaboration of Harold Budd's remarkable corpus remains the still unique and compelling "Through the Hill" with Andy Partridge. If you don't have "Through the Hill", get it instead of this. If you do have "Through the Hill", play it instead of this.

Having heard his work with Brian Eno, which was superlative, this was disappointing & often mundane.
