A Marge Christensen Mystery November 26, 2007
Forty seven year old Marge Christensen finds her husband, Gene, dead in their garage, slumped over the steering wheel of his still running BMW. The police rule the death a suicide. Marge does not believe Gene killed himself. Although likely suspects for murder and fraud do not abound in the suburban community of Bellevue, Washington, with perseverance and basic sleuthing, Marge discovers the truth in spite of the doubts and cautions from the police, her two adult children, and hovering and obsessively attentive neighbors.

Review

Batta, a teacher by trade, does a first rate job depicting the leaden weight of Marge's loss. This book is labeled A Marge Christensen Mystery, which suggests future appearances by the somber but resolute widow. It will be interesting to see how she tackles crime solving in which she has no personal involvement. --ForeWord Magazine Review by Edward Morris

I picked up this book for a quick look over, but found myself caught up in the story. The book is a page turner despite a deceptively quiet beginning. Marge is a n engaging character. I look forward to reading the next one. --R.J. Bryant, Author

Batta inflames your curiosity. You will want to linger over lunch, refuse to turn out the light. --Jody M. Clark, Writer and Editor

More About the Author

When her fourth grade teacher asked the class to write a story, Patricia K. Batta (Pat) was hooked. She already read incessantly, escaping the realities of her life, and now she discovered she could create her own world. So she began to write, some school assignments but mostly bad poetry and sappy love stories which only her sisters could enjoy.

Needing to support herself and not convinced she could write anything the outside world would pay for, she became an elementary teacher. Teaching reading became a passion, but left little time for writing. A stint as an editorial assistant on a magazine rekindled her desire and sharpened her skills, so she took some time to write. She ended up with an unpublishable novel and had to go back to work.

At this point Pat decided she would retire at age fifty-five and spend the second half of her life writing. She almost made it. She retired at age fifty-seven and immediately started the first of the Marge Christensen Mystery Series. That finally made publication in 2009, and Pat has been reading and writing ever since.

When she isn't doing either of those, Pat is busy with her church, singing in the choir and serving on the Hunger Committee. She is also active with Love In the Name of Christ (INC). Add in promotion for her books, responsibilities for her extended family, taking classes from Northwestern Michigan College, and other volunteer work, and she can't help but wonder how she ever found time to work.

This review is from: What Did You Do Before Dying? (A Marge Christensen Mystery) (Paperback)
This story opens with a recent widow finding out that she is not agreeable with the cause of death of her husband. As Marge Christensen begins her quest, she is also faced with the fact that her son and attorney have kept her in the dark about finances. Marge is broke.

Faced with widowhood and having to find money to live on, Marge shows a backbone that her family (children) didn't realize she possessed. Bellevue, Washington is in for a shake-up as Marge tracks down the killer of her husband.

You, the reader, become quickly involved with Marge and cheer her on her search. Marge's pain is realistic and could easily be anyone's. Rebuilding a life and creating one for the future takes willpower, brains, and energy which we find in the character of Marge.

This book can stand alone but, I thrilled that there is another one to follow.

This cozy mystery flows well and kept me up reading to the end. The feelings and the struggles of the main character coping with new widowhood are poignant and ring true. Marge just can't believe her husband committed suicide and left her penniless and she is determined to find the truth, despite opposition.
