Editorial Reviews

Big Sir is the longtime collaboration between bassist Juan Alderette (The Mars Volta) and singer/composer Lisa Papineau. Since its inception in the late 90s, Big Sir has explored a vast array of tunes merging electronic and analog sounds with Papineau's extremely versatile vocal acrobatics that leap from delicate whisper to soaring wail. Their third album Before Gardens After Gardens finds the duo expanding their sonic palette with varied instrumentation and moods. At times danceable, others darkly haunting, the album is as visually evocative and it is musically compelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cedric Bixler-Zavala AND Matt Embree?! November 24, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
For whatever reason I'm not big on bands with female lead-vocalists. If I had known this was one of those bands I might not have purchased this album. The reason I did purchase this is because I was looking through Cedric Bixler-Zavala's discography on Wikipedia and this came up. After reviewing the Wikipedia article on this album I found out that it also features Matt Embree and Steve Choi of RX Bandits. That being said, At The Drive-In and RX Bandits have been on my top-five-musical-artists list for a long time (Modest Mouse, Mike Patton & Operation Ivy filling out the other 3 slots).

Anyway, I do not regret purchasing this album at all. Before Gardens After Gardens is beautiful music that I plan on listening to many times in the future. Honestly, I have a hard time deciphering when it is Cedric singing or the band's lead-singer so I really don't know how much he contributed to this album but I'm pretty confident that the only song on here that features Matt Embree is "The Kindest Hour". After further research I have found that Matt Embree and Lisa Papineau (Bir Sir's lead-vocalist) have put out a CD under the name "ME & LP" and I highly recommend everyone check that out as well!

If you're interested in more of Cedric Bixler-Zavala's lesser-known contributions I recommend you check out the self-titled album by Anywhere and the recently released two-track single "Our Last Dance" by Nobody. If you want to hear another great album featuring a female lead-vocalist be sure to check out the self-titled album by Pillowfight which is a very good collaboration between Dan The Automator and Emily Wells, with one song featuring Mike Patton!

**EDIT: After listening to this album several times I have decided that my initial rating of 4 stars was not appropriate. There is nothing about this album that supports a rating of anything below 5 stars!
