The characters were well developed and the story line was interesting..
Read for Fun
The ending was a total surprise and I had to skim back through the book to figure out where I missed the clues.
Unexpected turns in the story will keep you interested to the last page.

"Before Her Eyes" is not usually the kind of book I read, but I agreed to review this book as a nice break from the usual fantasy and science fiction books I review. I thought it would be a quick and easy read of solving a murder mystery in a small town, but I was wrong. This book is so much more than that and made me do a lot of thinking about how we all judge people based on our own perceptions and biases of who we think they are when we look at them.

The story revolves around Sherriff Dove Connelly, a good moral stand-up kind of guy who battles his own inner demons while trying to solve the murder of his friend, Fritz, the local store owner, and the kidnapping of Tessa Bradley, a local socialite, from the scene of the crime. Throughout the investigation that covers 48 hours, everything that Dove thought he knew about the people of his mountain enclave is challenged, warped and then twisted back into a new slot. Even Dove himself must undergo this torturous journey if he ever wants to have peace and happiness with his wife and child.

The author lets the story unfold through two viewpoints - third person to follow Dove and the investigation and first person for Tessa Bradley. It is Tessa's voice that draws you in, haunts you, makes you listen to her, and leaves you a shadow of former yourself when she's done with you. Her beauty blinds all who see her, but no one really sees her, no one really knows her, all except for one, and he's never met her before. Dove is determined to find Tessa not because she's a beautiful woman, but because she is a woman in need and that's his job.

This book makes you think and I like that. I highly recommend it, but make sure you carve out the time to read it because once you start, you won't want to put it down until the last word is read.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Nothing boring about this book. Starts of by grabbing the reader's attention and continues to hold it throughout. At first, I was disappointed with how it ended but I quickly got over that. I won't get into why lest I give the ending away.

Starts off with Dove, the sheriff getting a phone call in the middle of the night. A man is dead. A beautiful woman who was a model in an earlier time, goes missing. Dove's friend's wife is dying of cancer. Things are happening but leaving the reader with no hint as to what it has to do with, driving curiosity up. Later in the book events start happening at a fast pace, keeping the reader glued to the pages.

This is the 3rd book I've read by this very talented author and it's one of her best! Rich characters, a fast-paced story and a tremendous ending that will have you rereading half the book to figure out why you missed all the clues. Download this now... it'll be the best $2.99 you've ever spent.

We have had a really good run here at the Dual Review site in these last few months, receiving some rather interesting book submissions. Rebecca Forster, you did not disappoint! Oh my, since I do not `cheat' and read the blurbs about what a book is about, I stepped into the world of Dove Connelly on his mountain, and took the ride of my life.

This story is heard in different POV's and begins with The Phone Call from the Police Dispatcher Jessica, calling Dove Connelly the Sheriff, alerting him to a heinous crime at Fritz's Mountain Store. It encompasses a few days in the lives of these people, who we meet one by one in individual chapters both in real time and in the past, telling their story through a timeline of events. It was a very clever way of relating this mystery.

So now you have met tall, handsome alpha, Dove Connelly, married to Cherie, having a beautiful baby daughter, and you sense right away that there is something `more' that we do not know. The call from Jessica has alerted Dove to leave his warm bed and go to Fritz's Mountain Store where Fritz, his best friend on the mountain, has been killed.

We also meet the beautiful Tessa Bradley, who through reading her words, looks like person or persons who have hurt Fritz have kidnapped her from the mountain store and have taken her captive. They have her bound in their vehicle for a while, and finally stop in the forest, pulling Tessa out into the night air. Tessa fights back and uses her car key as a weapon, thrusting it into the eye socket of one of her captors and rendering him helpless. This allows her to get away, running through the woods not knowing where she is. Fearing for her life and desperately cold, she flees.

This is the first book of Rebecca Foster's that I have read. It has a good beginning - the reader is immediately inserted into the action of the story. I really wanted to like this book, as its characters (a small-town sheriff, his wife and child; a famous model, now retired; other local characters) seemed very interesting. The story was a good mystery (I did not figure out the "whodunnit" part) and also included an element of fantasy / supernatural which added a nice twist to the tale.

However much I really wanted to love this book there were some things which were annoying: One - the lack of copy-editing drove me nuts! There were many instances of missing letters in words, of misspellings ("heroine" instead of "heroin" when refering to the drug), and the like. Secondly, it seemed as if there were pages missing from the story. I guess I'd have liked the tale to be much more fleshed-out than it was. If I care about a character, I want to know more about him/her. With all of the main characters in this tale (especially Dove and Tessa) I got the sense of having 'missed' a prior book. There was information revealed, but many details which would have been interesting, were not given.

I did receive this copy as a complimentary review copy, and am glad I had the opportunity to discover Foster's work. Her ideas are definitely original and interesting. I look forward to reading more - if possible - about the main character (Dove) of this story!

More About the Author

I marketed a world-class spa when it was still called a gym and did business in China before there were western toilettes at the Great Wall. Then I wrote a book on a crazy dare and found my passion.

Now, I am a USA Today and Amazon best selling author with more than 26 books to my name - and if you ask me where all those words came from I'd be hard pressed to tell you. All I know is that I wake up with a story in my head and go to bed the same way.

I write thrillers with an eye toward the very human element of my characters. The Witness Series follows the lives of attorney Josie Bates, her ward, Hannah, and Josie's lover, Archer. The series was voted #1 in PRG Reviewers Choice for series and Eyewitness was voted #1 in the mystery/thriller genre. I try to push creative boundaries with my non-series books. Before Her Eyes garnered a B&P Readers Choice Award for best mystery.

I have taught at the UCLA Writers Program, UC Irvine and Cal State Long Beach and lecture at writers groups, women's conferences and philanthropic events. I am most proud of the work I do with The Young Writers Conference, a program that helps motivate middle school children to explore the power of words. I am particularly drawn to kids who want to write because both my sons have always had a passion for it. Eric is a playwright and novelist (see Eric Czuleger) and Alex is in film.

When I'm not writing I'm traveling, on a tennis court, working a sewing machine or reading. Thank you so much for taking a look at my author page. You can find out more about me - and leave me a note - at
