Book Description

Falling in love is easy. Staying in love is work.
Stephanie Austin has it all - a loving wife of 17 years, a handsome teenage son, a comfortable home in the suburbs, professional success, and a bright future. At forty, Stephanie’s life is all she’d ever dreamed of, but like the old blues song says, “What a difference a day makes.”
Betrayal by the woman she loves, thought she knew, and always trusted, cuts deep. Forgiveness is a simple word, but is it possible?
This is a story about love and family, with all the joys and pains of a lifetime commitment. When Stephanie's perfect world starts spiraling out of control, the fate of her family rests in her hands. With the help of her mother, friends, an old flame, and a healthy dose of humor, Stephanie must decide if she can put aside the hurt and figure out how to clean up the mess, before it stains their lives forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book I have read in a long, long time December 10, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Lesbian romance books start and end this way: girl-meets-girl, they fall in love, have mind blowing sex, and pledge to stay together forever. If only that's how life really was.

In R.E. Bradshaw's newest book, "Before it Stains" the other side of romance - the staying in love part -- is explored as never before in any other lesbian book that I can recall.

Seventeen years ago Stephanie and Maureen (Mo) met, fell in love, and promised to be true and together forever. Then life happened. Their time was spent investing in their careers, raising their son, building and maintaining family and community involvement, and attending to the other millions of details that comes with three active lives.

Along the way, the love shared by Stephanie and Mo changed from fireworks and violins to easy and contented. Their life was predictable, comfortable, and going according to plan.

Then everything changed. One of them broke the ultimate vow - to be true.

So the question becomes - what's next? The life they created during their 17 years together is over and does that mean their relationship is finished, too? Can you forgive but do you forget? The years they shared were as a rubber band stretched too far and it snaps. The rubber band can be tied so that it functions again but the knot will always remain as a reminder of a difficult and heart breaking time. Is it possible to fix a broken relationship so that no scars are left behind? Is getting even the ultimate revenge? Do two wrongs make everything right? How do you put the pieces of a reationship back together when a heart and trust have been broken?

"Before it Stains" literally raises the bar in the genre of lesbian fiction. It is sad, funny, poignant, sexy, and thought provoking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical Lesfic December 24, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this book, which I bought two days ago. This is the third book I have read from the author and it is clear that she does not write standard lesfic. Her characters feel real and they are struggling with real life situations. Yes, the books often offer up the happily-ever-after ending that we all want when we read fiction to escape our own realities. But, the trajectory feels different. In this book, she brilliantly portrays a long term lesbian couple who has to face issues that have been latent for many years but are now evident after one of the partners cheats. The story is about the couple finding their way back to one another. To anyone who has been in a long term marriage the story is instructive and feels realistic. Well done. I look forward to more books from this author.

2.0 out of 5 stars Casting the First Stone February 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ms. Bradshaw writes very well and in this novel, she tackles the complex question of how a couple who has made a long-term, loving marriage and good life together, copes with a heartbreaking mistake. If I could, I'd give the first half of the book a 4.5/5 star rating for doing such a good job of portraying the family life of two women who have been in love for nearly two decades and who have successfully raised a son into adolescence. The book also does an excellent job of showing that same good life suddenly thrown into total disarray when one half of the loving couple makes a heartbreaking error. The anguish that follows, the loss of trust, the pain of betrayal is all readily captured in the first half of the book. For me, the second half of the book barely rated 1 star, thus the final rating of 2 stars.

Dr. Maureen Hunt, aka "Mo", is chasing her life long dream. In doing so, she puts herself in harm's way and she pays the price. Mo may have slept with her agent. The agent, eager for forbidden fruit, makes certain Mo's wife, Stephanie, finds evidence of infidelity. Stephanie is stunned, heartbroken and left to pick up the pieces.

An endless set of questions follow in the wake of the realization her wife has slept with someone else; how to shield their teenage son, Colton, from the fallout; how to go forward when her vision of the future has been shattered; and, how to cope with the pain of betrayal. There are no easy answers to any of those questions, but the second half of the book is less an exploration of those questions than a long, repetitive riff on punishing someone endlessly for getting so drunk, they are no longer capable of removing themselves from harm's way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great December 17, 2011
By Kay
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was very well written, and a nice break from the typical lesbian romance.
The author did a great job of making you want the couple to stay together even after the betrayal. Makes you take a minute to think about what you would do if this happened in your life. Hopefully, you would have a partner who would fight like these two did.

5.0 out of 5 stars thought provoking and full of emotion December 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
RE takes the reader on a roller coaster ride of emotions: well written, fast paced and with her usual touch of great characters. Steph is as temperamental as you can get when confronted with a major crisis in her marriage - great dialogues and thought provoking: what to do when the unimaginable and unexpected happens? Great dialogues. I "loved" the neighbor busy bodies <lol>. Thought provoking - this book makes the reader look at her own relationship, appreciate the good and wonder about some necessary changes. Good thing! Loved Colt. Good to meet some of the sweet Carolina girls again ... and of course we do have to learn Molly's story right about NOW!
