Book Description

1979
The year that Milton Osborne judges to have been a turning point in Cambodia's modern history was 1966, a year he spent working in Phnom Penh and travelling widely in the countryside. He recounts many telling - and moving - personal experiences during this time: the corruption and political manoeuvring within the capital, visits to the provinces, and, above all, friendships with Cambodians who were to make their own direct contributions to the years ahead. This title provides both a knowledgeable, personal record of people and places in a rapidly changing society, and a penetrating analysis of the factors that were soon to plunge a country into chaos and disaster.

This review is from: Before Kampuchea: Preludes to tragedy
I read this book when it first came out in 1979, and still keep it close at hand on my bookshelves. Aside from being good general background reading on Cambodia, it's an excellent and detailed indictment of how US policy pushed Cambodia right into the arms of the Khmer Rouge back in the early 70s. Just like US policy is pushing Iraq into the hands of Shi'ite extremists now. The Americans just never learn ...
