Book Description

January 1988
The black experience in America-starting from its origins in western Africa up to the present day-is examined in this seminal study from a prominent African American figure. The entire historical timeline of African Americans is addressed, from the Colonial period through the civil rights upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s. The most recent scholarship on the geographic, social, economic, and cultural journeys of African Americans, together with vivid portraits of key black leaders, complete this comprehensive reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Essentials of Forgotten American History, June 28, 2007
By
This review is from: Before the Mayflower: A History of Black America/25th Anniversary Edition (Hardcover)
More than just Black American History, but a huge chunk of American history in general. So many contributions and historic figures rarely mentioned in the average classroom. Not even during "Black History Month". An amazing collection of forgotten events that greatly impacted this nation. Should be drawn upon for reference by every author of any U.S. history textbook. Vital information to our nation's past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely an essential read for EVERY American!, February 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Before the Mayflower: A History of Black America/25th Anniversary Edition (Hardcover)
While reading the February 1999 edition of American Legacy magazine, I came across an article titled "Essential Black Books: A Top-100 List". Of course, Before The Mayflower was on that list. I remembered ,as a child, that my father had this book in his collection and the effect it had on me as I merely skimmed the pages at that time. Now that I am grown, I cannot wait to experience this book again and to share it with my daughter.
