Book Description

Eleanor Emberton isn't sitting around waiting for a handsome prince to rescue her. In fact, she's determined to save not only herself, but her whole family from her stepmother's headlong plunge into financial ruin. When she meets a mysterious man at the ball, romance is the last thing on her mind, but she can't help feeling an instant attraction. Before long she finds herself head over heels for her charming suitor. So what if he's left out a few teeny, tiny details?

Before the Midnight Bells is a fresh look at the Cinderella story, with humor, intrigue, and a healthy dose of passion

5.0 out of 5 stars I laughed and cheered and was happy October 4, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book may look like a Cinderella story, and at it's core it is, however it is so much better than that.

Ella (Eleanor) is not a harassed and abused stepsister, she is in fact a respected and loved member of her family. Yes she has only her stepmother and stepsisters, but none are evil, rather each is differently irrational or naive. The step family was actually one of my favorite parts, because I got side characters that I could cheer on for, even though I loved the main couple. Each person has their endearing qualities, none are mary-sue perfect by any means (even Ella), and that meant that you could connect with them easily.

The best part of the book was how ridiculously funny it is. I cannot count how many times I stopped reading to recount parts to my roommate just because the laughter needed to be shared. The humor has a bit of satire, but it is not poking fun at fairytale romance as its focus. In my opinion, the humor was spot on to make the fairytale not cliche, but original (which, let's face it, is hard to do sometimes).

If you want a book that is a fun read, especially for laughs, I definitely recommend this book. I will definitely be looking for more by the author in the future. In fact, all I wanted to do when finishing was give her a big hug, it was that great.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rated R (or X) April 16, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Sadly, I think I downloaded this with everybody else when it had only a few reviews. I didn't read it until later (but should have read the reviews before I started). I loved the characters at first but then it got VERY sexually explicit. I thought, " oh, I'll just skip that" but when it turned out to be pages and pages: done! If this is your thing, of course, this review won't be helpful but to those of us who don't like to read that stuff, it definitely needs the warning. Seriously writers...just let us know on the description and we'll leave your books alone and won't give it the one-star reviews. How about : Before the Midnight Bells (sexually explicit)? It would save us all time and you'd weed out the readers right from the get-go.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story November 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I rate this 3.5 stars. I bought this book after reading all the 5 start reviews mentioning the fun aspect of the book. To me there's nothing better than a romantic fun book. I enjoyed the book but it fail to capture me from the start. Up until 26% I was thinking I had made a mistake buying it, but thankfully I didn't it. The story is quite nice. It has some very sweet moments that I truly enjoyed, some very nice passionate scenes and yes, some funny scenes. That being said I felt like the funny scenes seemed a bit forced. I can't count how many times I read "he laughed", "she laughed" .........just a bit overdone I think. I liked the book but it's not up there with my 5 or 4 star ones.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Liked It March 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was surprised to read the one star reviews calling it porn etc..... I've read a lot worse. The story was solid entertaining and by all means those of you that don't like the sex scenes skip it and it won't help or hinder the story at all. I was glad to have read it for free and look forward to more by the author.

3.0 out of 5 stars spin on a fairy tale February 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this book because I love to read new spins on a fairy tale and the reviews of this book spoke of that. The spin is new and original and I liked the characters. They are interesting, well rounded and have the potential to be funny. Most of the reviews say that the book is funny. It is true that it has some funny scenes but for me the humour in these scenes seemed a bit forced. There are some nice passionate scenes and all in all the book was nice to read and I would recommend it if you like fairy tales.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good September 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm not sure if I've ever written a review on amazon before, but I found Jessica Woodard's story so refreshingly good, I thought it would be disingenuous if I didn't. I started "Before the Midnight Bells" assuming it would be yet another Kindle offering that was either "meh" or sub-par in editing and story line, but I was almost immediately wrapped up in her unusual take on the classic Cinderella story. I almost don't want to equate them, because I liked her version quite a lot better than the traditional one.

Ella's stepmother and stepsisters are infuriating at times, as their silliness makes Ella's life all that much more difficult, but you find them endearing and worth salvaging anyway. Through all of the missteps Ella and Max make, there is a sense of fun even during the most tense parts, and the wit takes me back to the best of old hollywood, when wit was more important than CGI. Before anyone thinks this is a childish fairy tale, there is just the right amount of REALLY good steaminess between the main characters.

I picked this book up as a freebie on Kindle when Woodard was offering it up for free. I liked it so much that I bought the next story (and enjoyed it just as much). I look forward to more offerings from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice twist on Cinderella May 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I thought this was a nice twist on Cinderella. Ella's stepmother and stepsisters aren't really evil just selfish and oblivious of their situation. Ella is a strong female character that isn't looking for the prince to save her. I was surprised by the "porn" comments from other reviewers. Like all romance novels it has a couple of spicy well done scenes, saying its porn is way too strong. If you are looking for Young Adult holding hands sparkly nonsense go elsewhere. If you are looking for an interesting and spicy retelling of Cinderella this is the book for you.
