Before My Heart Stops: A MemoirI have never been more uplifted or inspired my anything in my life. I've re-read the book simply because it is incredible. How anyone can go through so-o much and maintain such an attitude of gratitude is incredible to me. I struggle a lot. I have physical struggles, but nothing like this...nothing. The emotional pain at times has been almost unbearable...I am almost jealous of the support. I know I am not alone is the dysfunctional family background and the ex from ...well, I guess less is best! But reading this amazing book by this incredible man from a family who stands by it's members gives me strength. Gives me hope. I love it and the power of it's message. Living a Christ centered life. Holding to that promise. Believing that all things are possible through Christ. What a great reminder to hold on to the iron rod, no matter what.
I am grateful for Paul Cardall; For his life, for his rich blessings and for sharing them with us that we might grow stronger, too.
Now that you will "live for Eden"...may you live a long, long life, filled with the kind of joy you give to others through your music and your life.

I love this book. I recently met Paul Cardall as I got to perform with him in a Christmas concert with our choir. He is a sweet, talented and humble man. His book tells of the journey of his heart problem and eventual heart transplant. I'm so glad the Lord spared this amazing man, so we can enjoy his beautiful piano music.

Good book, but at the time I read it I was looking for a greater message of hope. I found bits and pieces, but for the most part it seemed more of a 'hooray for me' book. The author is an exceptional person and could have done a much better job I think.

"Before My Heart Stops" is a compelling memoir of pianist/composer Paul Cardall's journey to receiving a heart transplant. Cardall was born with a severe heart defect that essentially left him with half of a functioning heart. He had his first emergency surgery when he was less than a day old and was not expected to survive to see his first birthday. Six major surgeries later, at the age of 36, Cardall was informed that he would not live much longer without a heart transplant. He was also told that he might not survive the transplant procedure itself. He was on the list for a heart transplant for 384 days, with a fair amount of that time spent in the hospital as his condition worsened.

Cardall's book is an inspiring combination of blog entries written during this time as well as narrative chapters that provide background information about Cardall's life. Several of the blog entries were written by Lynnette Cardall, Paul's wife, and one was written by one of his doctors. The blog/journal is so effective in conveying the emotions as well as the events over that period of time that you feel like you're right there with Cardall. The strength of his religious faith (LDS) coupled with his deep love for his wife and daughter kept Cardall determined to beat the odds in order to continue to live for those he loves. Conversely, he was also prepared to accept God's will, should he not survive the surgery. Cardall's positive and optimistic nature and unwavering faith are nothing less than inspiring and life-affirming. I found myself very touched and moved by Cardall's words and I'm sure his music will take on a new meaning for me now that I have an understanding of all he has been through.

"Before My Heart Stops" is an excellent book from so many perspectives and I strongly recommend it to readers of all ages.

My son is 4 months old and was born with a half a heart, just like Paul Cardall. This book came highly recommended by friends in the CHD world and medical professionals at PCMC. I liked that it was written by a person who has lived with CHD. I saw through his eyes what my son will go through in life. I was uplifted in that Paul did not dwell on his disabilities but looked for the good that came from such experiences.

It is very difficult to have a child and know that he will have a difficult and probably shortened life. This book is one that has given me hope and some peace for a positive future.

Mr.Cardall's written account of his wait for a heart transplant is a beautiful reminder to never give up hope. It also illustrates how important a family's love and support is through difficult times. Mr. Cardall is a very good example of a man who lives his Mormon faith in an uncomplicatedly real way which I found refreshing and comforting even though I am not Mormon.

I have read the book years ago. I have also had open-heart surgery, nothing anywhere close to what Paul has been through. A friend recently went through her second open-heart surgery and I felt she would enjoy the book. She has.

For all of us who have, or will, experience life's hardships in one form or another, Paul Cardall beautifully portrays his emotions while climbing a seemingly insurmountable hurdle in his life. In this true story you will feel his pain, his desires, and his joy. You will laugh with him, cry with him, and rejoice with him.
Paul Cardall, a four-time Billboard-charting recording artist, has inspired people worldwide with not only his music, but also his encouraging personal story. Paul was born with a congenital heart defect and survived for 36 years with this fatal condition. Right on the front cover of the book Paul states, "I was born with half a heart. God made up the difference." He married the girl of his dreams and shortly thereafter become the father to a baby girl -Eden- for whom he lovingly names his blog, Living for Eden. In his blog Paul documented every feeling he experienced, especially his eternal desire to live long enough to watch Eden grow up.
This book was un-traditionally written during his experience, giving the reader an unmatched view of life with a fatal illness. The beautifully captured emotions are the result of Paul's journal (blog) entries; they are so compelling that you will suddenly find yourself in his room, standing aside the bed, unable to excuse yourself. Preventing yourself from taking a seat on Paul's emotional roller-coaster becomes more and more difficult as the pages effortlessly turn.
What would have helped this book's reading flow more smoothly is more reflection, less history; Paul's approach was to cut and paste his blog entries between a hardcover, creating a "choppy" feel which comes after reading several blog posts in a row.
In the end you discover the essence of a good book- a happy ending.
