More About the Author
Why is this important? Studies show that 40 to 50% of outside hired senior executives ultimately fail in their jobs. Internal promotees succeed at a higher rate (but not by much). Moreover, what happens in the first 90 days a new leader is onboard often determines his or her ultimate outcome.
The process described in Before Onboarding focuses on the first 90 days. New leaders arrive fully prepared to secure early wins; avoid costly, preventable mistakes; rapidly blend with and meet or exceed the expectations of their stakeholders; and sustain their early successes long term. This is a "pre-boarding", facilitator-led process. It begins when an offer is accepted and culminates 90 days after the start date. The new leader arrives with a "Blueprint for Success" that ensures the right things are done in the right order and in the right way during the first 90 days.
Michael is available to recruit, integrate and coach new executives, and for public speaking engagements on the subject of executive transitions. He also prepares internal professionals to conduct this innovative service for their own organizations. You can reach Michael at email@example.com.

I've also seen this process used at supervisory and middle management levels in organizations with very positive results. Effective leadership is more important now than it has ever been. The tools and concepts described in this book can go a long way to ensuring a new leader's success.
Burrough's advice and concepts in the book will be a terrific aid to executives, in almost any industry, who are in a position to hire a new executive leader. This book will make a world of difference for senior HR folks, CEO's and Boards who want to get their newly hired senior leaders off to a good start. Even better would be to contact the author, Mike Burroughs, and get his help in bringing on board a new CEO!
Burroughs' process is simple and his book to describe it is a quick read. He highlights the critical message which is that the new leader needs to walk in the door on the first day fully briefed on performance expectations and where the pitfalls lie. Burroughs notes that when recruiting a new leader, problems and opportunities are presented in as positive light as possible, while hopefully representing the challenges fairly. Before arriving on the scene, however, the new leader should have a full 360 degree view of the expectations and challenges of the role from the boss, peers, and reports, not just the recruiting stakeholders. This assessment is best compiled by a coach, consultant, or insider who can guarantee the confidentiality of the contributors to the assessment. Most importantly, the assessment is compiled solely for the new leader's review, no others, including the new boss.Read more ›
